    A wide variety of complex ceramic materials are synthesized, very often with novel physical properties far beyond our expectation. Doping even a slight amount of impurities into monolithic ceramics such as silica drastically change their material characteristics. This is a cooperative research between the material science groups at Louisiana State University in the U.S.A. and Niigata University in Japan to unveil the rationale behind such functionality of materials. The two groups have complementary computational skills and experimental expertise: electronic structure calculations, parallel algorithms, large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, and neutron scattering experiments. The interdisciplinary research efforts are devoted to investigation of structures, dynamical correlations, and dielectric and mechanical properties of various doped and undoped oxide, chalcogenide, and nitride materials.
