Photogenerated radical ion pairs are important intermediates that govern the optoelectronic and magnetic responses of organic materials. We have succeeded in observing a singlet-born radical pair with a microsecond-order lifetime in a photoelectric device comprising a perylenediimide-doped poly(N-vinylcarbazole) film at room temperature. The simultaneously detected transient optical absorption signal due to the electron and photocurrent signal due to the hole are enhanced by an applied magnetic field of 250 mT, which is explained by the quantum spin dynamics of the radical pair. Detailed analysis of the magnetic field effect and its temperature dependence has revealed that the photogenerated holes that comprise the radical pair are captured in either a shallow trap site of a few meV depth or a deep trap site of 100–200 meV depth, from which detrapping-limited (∼100 ns) and tunneling recombination (a few microseconds) occur, respectively. In contrast to the nearly temperature-independent recombination dynamics, the hole drift mobility exhibits large activation energies of over 100 meV because the hole transport in the micrometer range is limited by detrapping from the deep trap site. The present study demonstrates the importance of trap sites in disordered materials, which can be utilized as reservoirs for long-lived radical pairs.

Niosomes are bilayer membrane capsules, which can be prepared very easily by dispersing low cost detergent molecules in water. They recently draws much attention as drug delivery materials for medical uses. In this project, basic researches have been carried out for development of novel materials such as photo- and magnetically controlable drug delivery and magnetically enhanecd artificial photosynthesis. Newly developed niosome capsules that involve a pigment and a vitamin molecule give the long-lived charge-separated state upon photo-irradiation, of which the lifetime is greatly enhanced by applied magnetic field. Multi-step electron transfer, which is important for artificial photosynthesis, is realized by utizling the niosome capsule. Preliminary results that indicate photo-control of the membrane structure, which is important for drug delivery, have also been presented.

Mechanistic studies have been conducted for electron transfer reactions in the interfaces of aqueous molecular assemblies consisting of detergent molecules such as micelles and vesicles. A sequential electron transfer system has been constructed on the interface of a nonionic micelle by using three kinds of molecules. In this system, a long-lived and long-range charge separated state is generated because of sequential electron transfer mediated by diffusion of the dynamic charge transporter molecule. In a nonionic vesicle system, construction of electron transfer system that exhibits a long-lived charge separated state has been succeeded. The transient concentration of the charge separated state is increased twice by application of magnetic field of 200 mT. These findings would help understanding of electron transfer in the vicinity of biomembranes and development of photo and magneto functional materials constructed from low-cost detergent molecules.

Supramolecular complex between water soluble porphyirns (donor) and naphthalene diimides (NDI, acceptor) was studied for the elucidation of basic mechanisms involved in photo-functional organic molecular assemblies. Efficient complex formation with an association constant over 10 to the 5th power is observed for complexes between a cationic porphyrin and anionic NDIs in an aqueous solution. It has been concluded from structural and environmental effect on the complex formation that the main driving force is the hydrophobic interaction, which is strongly affected by the coulomb interaction. Spectroscopic studies indicate the fast forward and back electron transfer in the assembly, of which the time constants are shorter than a few picoseconds.
