    Introductions of non-native predatory fishes can be a major driver of aquatic biodiversity loss. The largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides (L.) has been introduced throughout much of the world, thereafter negatively affecting native faunal communities owing to its predatory impact. To investigate the environmental factors affecting the predatory performance of invasive bass, we examined the stomach contents and habitat characteristics of bass in 15 irrigation farm ponds in northeastern Japan. The food habits of the bass populations differed among the studied ponds: the predominant prey items were fishes among bass in seven of the ponds, whereas aquatic invertebrates (mainly insects and zooplankton) were the predominant taxa in the diets of bass in the eight remaining ponds, with the onset of piscivory related to body size. The results of multivariate analysis indicated that the extent to which the bass consumed fish was positively associated with fish prey abundance and negatively associated with percentage of aquatic vegetation coverage. We suggest that the extent of aquatic vegetation coverage strongly influenced the predation efficiency of bass in the ponds. These findings might be employed to assess a pond ecosystem’s vulnerability to invasive largemouth bass and to reduce the predator’s impact on native fish species by improvements to the habitat.

    Coastal streams provide important habitat for many diadromous fish species, which migrate between freshwater and the sea during their life cycle. However, coastal systems are poorly studied in comparison to large, continental river systems. Furthermore, the relative importance of catchment- and site-scale factors in structuring lotic fish communities is largely unknown. In this study, I addressed these issues by surveying the fish fauna of small coastal streams on Sado Island (northwest Japan) and determining the relative importance of catchment-and site-scale factors to the structure of freshwater fish assemblages. In total, 14 freshwater fish species were collected from the 19 streams. All but one of the fish species collected were diadromous and 9 of the species (64%) were amphidromous, primarily represented by the goby group including the genera Rhinogobius and Gymnogobius. Variance partitioning analyses showed that catchment-scale factors (namely, stream discharge) were better predictors of both fish species richness and composition than site scale and spatial factors. These results indicate that discharge, which is directly linked to habitat stability, can have a major role in structuring coastal fish assemblages, likely because small coastal streams experience extreme discharge fluctuations associated with regional weather conditions.

    Riparian fluvial systems are used for the irrigation of rice. This practice has led to an increasing need to conserve biodiversity of these riparian systems against intensification of riceirrigation systems. This study examined the underlying processes that structure fish community assemblages in a traditional rice irrigation system and how these processes might inform conservation programmes.
    Sampling was conducted at 26 reaches of a permanent irrigation channel in September and December 2007 and May 2008. The relative roles of niche versus dispersal processes were determined by examining species richness across the local environment, such as habitat complexity (diversity of depth and velocity) and size (volume of water) or proximity from the river as potential source of species, and deterministic versus stochastic processes. Non-random or random patterns of species co-occurrence were also compared across the sites.
    Each site's species richness was mainly associated with habitat complexity and size, but not proximity to the river. Also, species co-occurred non-randomly in segregated patterns. Therefore, the fish community was deterministically structured by niche processes and local extinction, but not by stochastic and external immigration processes. In addition, the observed relative abundance distributions primarily fitted a log-normal distribution, indicating a low stress' condition for the fish community.
    To enhance co-existence of fish species, high conservation priority should be given to local factors such as hydraulic complexity and volume of water at reach scale in the rice irrigation system. Fish species preferring slow and shallow environments co-occurred less frequently among reaches, demonstrating the need to conserving hydraulic variability. The effectiveness of local factors and deterministic patterns is thought to derive from stable water flow and high internal and external connectivity, which in turn would safeguard the processes that structure fish community assemblages. Such hydrological connectivity might be the key for conservation in intensified rice-farming landscapes. Copyright (c) 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Contribution of amphidromous (Ooayu) and lake types (Koayu) of the landlocked Ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis) fish population in Lake Biwa to the next generation was investigated by isotopic approaches. delta N-15 values of eggs in adult ovaries distinctively differed between the two types. Contribution of Koayu, calculated using delta N-15 values of spawned Ayu eggs, was much greater than that of Ooayu in general, as previously reported. Ooayu spawned more eggs in the upper area of the spawning ground and did so late in the season. These results show the potential of isotopic approaches for identifying maternal life-history types of spawned eggs of migratory animals.

    Non-native species are difficult to eradicate or control once established. Thus, the prevention of invasions is a high priority for conserving native ecosystems. Our objective was to determine the factors that influence illegal introductions of non-native largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) and to develop a model that could be used to predict the pattern of future illegal introduction by anglers. We used generalized linear modeling (GLM) to evaluate the relationship between landscape and environmental factors and the presence of bass in farm ponds. Our results suggest that the occurrence of bass was primarily associated with pond size, distance of ponds from the urban center, and the proportion of the pond shoreline covered with a concrete revetment. We conclude that introductions occurred in ponds that were: easier to locate on a map, closer to anglers' residential areas, and more easily accessible to the pond shore. Last, we suggest our predictive model could be used for preventive measures, such as identifying other ponds most at risk of future illegal introduction of non-native bass.

    Beak marks on butterfly wings have been used as an indicator of predation pressure. The relationship between butterflies and their predators in the field was examined to evaluate the beak mark rate as an indicator of predation pressure. Transect censuses were conducted to measure the beak mark rate on butterflies from May to November, 2010, in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. A total of 1216 butterflies of 42 species from five families were observed during the study period. The beak mark rate in the Papilionidae was significantly higher than those of all other families. Analysis of the monthly fluctuations in the beak mark rate and relative abundance of predators revealed that the higher beak mark rates observed for two butterfly families (Papilionidae and Nymphalidae) were significantly and positively related to predation pressure, while no significant relationship was found for other families (Lycaenidae, Pieridae and Hesperiidae). Beak marks in larger butterflies (Papilionidae and Nymphalidae) can be used as an indicator to evaluate the relative intensity of predation pressure in the field.

    Artificial water bodies, including farm ponds, contribute to regional biodiversity by providing alternative habitats for many species. Although management operations, such as dredging, are commonly conducted in farm ponds to maintain their function, little is known about the effects of habitat change associated with such operations on fish assemblages. The objective of this research was to examine the relationship between fish assemblage structure and pond management and via a comparative study before and after a dredging event. It was found that the fish assemblage structure was significantly different after the dredging event. Before dredging, extensive growth of aquatic macrophytes and low dissolved oxygen level were observed. Only two Cobiticlae species, which have a tolerance to dissolved oxygen depletion, were recorded just before dredging. After dredging, the dissolved oxygen level and number of fish species had increased. The results indicated that management operations could change the fish assemblage structure via a shift in the dissolved oxygen level associated with changes in macrophyte coverage.     Understanding the mechanism governing the movements of stream-dwelling fish is a fundamental issue associated with a diverse range of ecological processes. We examined the movement pattern of a small benthic species, Lefua echigonia, using a mark-recapture technique in small headwater streams. Our main objectives were as follows: (i) to assess the movement range and direction of L.echigonia; (ii) to examine how biotic and abiotic factors affect emigration and immigration patterns and (iii) to assess movement patterns at the stream scale. Stationary fish accounted for the greatest proportion of recaptured adult L.echigonia. Seventy-five per cent of recaptured individuals moved <100m in 12months after release, and the maximum movement distance was 500m upstream. Moreover, adult L.echigonia showed significant upstream bias in movements. According to the results of the generalised linear mixed model GLMM analysis, movement of adult L.echigonia was associated mainly with the density of conspecifics, rather than with habitat quality and body size. Adult L.echigonia were mainly stationary in relatively high-density sections, and emigration tended to increase with decreasing density. Moreover, mobile individuals were prone to move into relatively high-density sections. The proportion of mobile fish showed a strong positive correlation with catchment area at the stream scale. This result indicates that stream discharge can influence the mobility of adult L.echigonia. During baseflow, the water was static in a number of stream sections, which suggests that the influence of catchment area on mobility may be more a function of freshets than normal water flow.

    魚類およびエビ類のため池内における植生帯および水深方向の空間利用を把握する目的で,岩手県奥州市胆沢区南部のため池において調査を行った.調査では5属種の魚類とスジエビが採捕された.アカヒレタビラは春に主に底層を利用しており,繁殖による利用の可能性が考えられた.ヨシノボリ属とスジエビは表層と底層の両者において採捕され,ため池内を広く利用していた.ドジョウは主に底層を利用していた.魚類およびエビ類の空間利用は採餌生態や繁殖生態と関係があると考えられ,各種の生態的特徴を反映したと考えられた.魚類やエビ類の生息場所として水生植物帯だけではなく開放水面も利用されていることが確認され,ため池に棲む水生生物の生息場の保全には多様な環境の維持が必要であることが示唆された.

    The presence of piscivorous fish has a significant effect on the structure of fish assemblages. Exotic, piscivorous largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) have been introduced to a number of Japanese farm ponds that were originally characterized by a high level of biodiversity. We evaluated the effects of exotic bass on the structure of the fish assemblage following their introduction into the farm ponds. We collected fish and measured environmental conditions in 14 ponds of northeastern Japan. The species richness of pond-dwelling fish assemblages was negatively correlated with the relative abundance of exotic bass. In addition, the relative abundance of lentic cyprinid species (e.g., Rhodeus ocellatus ocellatus, Pseudorasbora parva and Carassius sp.) was negatively correlated with the relative abundance of exotic bass. The abundance of these species was also influenced by environmental factors, including transparency and/or coverage of aquatic vegetation, likely related to their influence on the predatory efficiency of exotic bass. Our results suggest that the structure of fish assemblages in farm ponds with exotic piscivorous fish was influenced by both biotic (i.e., predation) and abiotic factors and that some environmental factors mediate the effects of exotic bass on fish species richness and composition.

    We investigated fish fauna in the littoral areas of Lake Saiko and Shojiko, Yamanashi Prefecture, Central Japan and compared them with those in previous studies. Two species have newly appeared in each lake: <i>Oncorhynchus masou masou</i> (Salmonidae) and <i>Pseudogobio esocinus esocinus</i> (Cyprinidae) in Lake Saiko and two Gobiidae species, <i>Tridentiger brevispinis</i> and <i>Gymnogobius urotaenia</i>, in Lake Shojiko. Three of these fishes are non-indigenous Japanese fishes and may have been introduced unintentionally in recent years, whereas <i>O. masou masou</i> was stocked for fishing by fishery managers of Lake Saiko. In Lake Saiko, the fish species composition has greatly changed and a goby, <i>Rhinogobius</i> sp. OR, has been dominated by another goby, <i>T. brevispinis</i>, during the past decade. In Lake Shojiko, species composition and dominant species has not changed and a goby, <i>R.</i> sp. OR, was the dominant benthic fish in littoral areas. However, we found that <i>T. brevispinis</i> has also invaded Lake Shojiko recently and greatly increased in number during the study period. The results indicated that unintentional introduction of non-indigenous fish species may have frequently occurred with fish stocking in recent years.

    Ponds are common features of the landscape and are considered important for freshwater biodiversity conservation. Although fish have a significant impact on the lentic ecosystems, the environmental factors that regulate fish assemblages in human-created water bodies, such as irrigation ponds, remain unclear. We evaluated the relationship between environmental factors and the fish assemblage structure in 31 ponds located in northern Japan. Species richness (range: 1-9) was positively correlated with the size of the inflow channel. Multivariate analyses revealed that the size of the inflow channel was a better predictor for species richness than lake morphology (surface area and maximum depth), vegetation coverage, water quality (turbidity, pH, DO, and EC), distance to the main channel, and distance to an adjacent pond. Species richness was significantly different between ponds with and without an inflow channel. Furthermore, three of the four most commonly observed species are thought to be relatively tolerant to low oxygen. Given that ponds have a relatively high local extinction rate resulting from exposure to stressful conditions, such as low oxygen and/or small population sizes, our results suggest that immigration from surrounding water bodies plays an important role in maintaining species richness of pond-dwelling fish.

    本研究では,国営農地再編整備事業において改修された岩手県奥州市胆沢区を流れる白鳥川・原川排水路の生態系配慮工法区間を対象に,改修前後の魚類と水路環境の推移を明らかにして,水路改修が魚類の生息に及ぼす影響を考察した.その結果,次の知見が得られた.1)直線とした区間では,改修後に寄州が形成されず,湿生・抽水植物が生育しなかった.また,魚類の種類数,多様度指数が減少した.ドジョウの密度のみが高くなり,改修前を基準とした類似度指数は低下して改修後約5年を経ても回復しなかった.2)屈曲させた区間では,寄州に湿性・抽水植物が生育した.また,改修前後で魚類の種類数,多様度指数に大きな変化は認められなかった.ドジョウ,アブラハヤ,ギバチの密度が高くなり,類似度指数が改修前と同程度になった.3)屈曲かつ急勾配とした区間では,水衝部に造成した淵が形成され続けたが,緩流域の形成が不十分であった可能性が考えられた.

    Our objectives are to examine the influence of the difference in stress tolerance among species on patterns of nestedness and to test whether a set of several small ponds supports more species than a few large ponds of equal area. Although fish species assemblages for each group of all fish, tolerant and intolerant species were significantly nested, intolerant species showed stronger nested tendency than tolerant species, suggesting that the tolerance of species can influence the patterns of nestedness. These results suggest that the tolerance of species can influence the patterns of nestedness. As for the comparison of cumulative species richness in small ponds and large ponds, although small ponds supported more species for tolerant species, there was little difference for intolerant species.

    1. The change in fish fauna was monitored in ponds within irrigation systems in Iwate prefecture, north-eastern Japan to evaluate the effectiveness of eradicating the invasive piscivorous largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides.
    2. Eleven study ponds were categorized into three pond groups: bass-dwelling (n = 3), bass-eradicated (n = 3) and non-invaded ponds (n = 5).
    3. Species richness and diversity, which temporally decreased in bass-dwelling ponds, increased in bass-eradicated ponds. Furthermore, in bass-eradicated ponds, the mean numbers of topmouth minnow and freshwater goby were gradually restored, but in bass-dwelling ponds the numbers decreased and both species eventually disappeared.
    4. Although the eradication of piscivorous invaders is helpful for restoring fish species diversity in ponds, its effectiveness varies among species, and other alien fish such as the rose bitterling (Rhodeus ocellatus ocellatus) often invade and proliferate in the bass-eradicated ponds.
    5. To ensure successful restoration of native biota and avoid undesirable results, it is necessary to plan and implement continuous monitoring and adaptive management after eradication of alien predators. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    To evaluate how <i>Lefua echigonia</i> use paddy fields, we studied the so-called "<i>yatsuda</i>" paddy fields in Tokyo from April through November of 2006. The investigation consisted of trapping fish that migrate between the paddy fields and the irrigation channel, followed by a distributional survey at the channel. In the analysis, we compared the results of each item assessed for <i>Lefua echigonia</i> with those for <i>Misgurnus anguillicaudatus</i> and found that while both <i>L. echigonia</i> and <i>M. anguillicaudatus</i> bred in the paddy fields, the main breeding site for <i>L. echigonia</i> was apparently the channel. These results along with the observation that many juvenile <i>L. echigonia</i> enter the paddy fields suggest that the paddy fields function mainly as the growth place for <i>L. echigonia</i>. It was also found that <i>L. echigonia</i> tended to exit the paddy fields at the point of water entry.

    We investigated the fish fauna in 50 irrigation ponds in Iwate prefecture, northeastern Japan. Four cases of new invasions of alien largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, into previously non-invaded ponds were observed during surveys from 2008 to 2009. Given the limitations of natural migration by largemouth bass, all of these cases were likely the result of illegal stocking. In three of the ponds, establishment of new populations of bass was successfully prevented by the removal of collected individuals during our survey. However, the population eradication in the remaining pond failed, and the recruitment of juveniles was observed in 2010 surveys. Our results suggest that the Invasive Alien Species Act was insufficient to prevent illegal stocking of largemouth bass and that further countermeasures such as monitoring surveys and patrolling are needed.

    本年度は(1)現地適用に向けた試作機の性能試験と縦断探索・評価システムの確立および(2)ネットワーク拠点を重視した生態系配慮事例の実態把握と類型化を進めた.特に,超音波装置による水路内魚類資源量探索システムの基礎的な技術の開発に注力し,性能試験を重ねた結果,概ね現地実装の目処がついたものの,医療用エコーの本システムへの援用・改良に関する課題が明らかになった.
    本システムの基幹的技術である超音波装置は,沖縄に拠点をもつベンチャー企業(レキオ・パワーテクノロジー株式会社)と共同で開発している.人体用に開発された医療用エコーの超音波センシング深度(23cm)を,本研究で対象とする農業用水路の水深(約1m)に延長するため,まずは46cmのセンシング深度に対応する装置に改良し,その後1m対応の装置を試作した.
    これらの改良装置の性能試験を新潟大学水理実験施設内の実験水路を利用して下記項目で行った.(1)水深による魚体の視認性の検証(2)移動計測時の魚体の計数率の検証(3)センシング角度による魚体の視認性の検討.性能試験によって,以下のことが明らかになった.
    (1)改良版の超音波エコー画像は,水深50cm以浅では供試材料の輪郭を明確に捉えられており,周波数による相違もほぼ認められなかったが,50 cm以上の画像では,試料の視認が困難になるのに加えて,底面の視認も困難であった.(2)移動速度約20 cm/sまでは理論値どおり,全ての魚体を捉えることができたが,移動速度が大きくなるにつれ,計数率が低下する傾向を示した.(3)鉛直方向よりも,45度程度傾けてセンシングすることで魚影を明確に捉えることができることが明らかになった.
