We designed a patient–radiopharmaceutical matching system for preventing misadministration using smartphone, and developed a deep-learning model to identify radiopharmaceutical containers as an elemental technology for the system. As a result of the ResNet18 transfer learning and 10-fold cross-validation, this model achieved 100% accuracy in classifying 15 different radiopharmaceutical containers. The feasibility of the proposed system was proven.

BACKGROUND: Imaging examinations are crucial for diagnosing acute ischemic stroke, and knowledge of a patient's body weight is necessary for safe examination. To perform examinations safely and rapidly, estimating body weight using head computed tomography (CT) scout images can be useful. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop a new method for estimating body weight using head CT scout images for contrast-enhanced CT examinations in patients with acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: This study investigates three weight estimation techniques. The first utilizes total pixel values from head CT scout images. The second one employs the Xception model, which was trained using 216 images with leave-one-out cross-validation. The third one is an average of the first two estimates. Our primary focus is the weight estimated from this third new method. RESULTS: The third new method, an average of the first two weight estimation methods, demonstrates moderate accuracy with a 95% confidence interval of ±14.7 kg. The first method, using only total pixel values, has a wider interval of ±20.6 kg, while the second method, a deep learning approach, results in a 95% interval of ±16.3 kg. CONCLUSIONS: The presented new method is a potentially valuable support tool for medical staff, such as doctors and nurses, in estimating weight during emergency examinations for patients with acute conditions such as stroke when obtaining accurate weight measurements is not easily feasible.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the accuracy of a bone coordinate system constructed using MR image composing. METHOD: A femoral coordinate system constructed using image composing of MR images of a whole bovine femur was evaluated using CT images. The MR images were acquired by moving the table and were processed with 3D distortion correction and composing. To evaluate the reproducibility of the measurements, the same operator repeated the construction of the femoral coordinate system. In addition, distortions in the MR images were evaluated in comparison with those in the CT images. RESULT: The center position of the femoral coordinate system constructed using the MR image composing was 1.6±0.9 mm on the X-axis, 1.5±0.8 mm on the Y-axis, and 0.2±0.3 mm on the Z-axis, and the rotation of each axis was 1° or less. The distortion of the composed MR image was about 0.3%. CONCLUSION: The femoral coordinate system constructed using MR image composing had the same accuracy as a system constructed with CT images. The effect of MR image composing on the construction of the femoral coordinate system was small.

OBJECTIVES: The present study was performed to investigate the mineral density distribution in enamel and dentin for both permanent and primary teeth and to establish the standard density per tooth type using micro-computed tomography (CT). METHODS: Fifty-seven extracted human teeth (37 permanent, 20 primary) were evaluated in the present study. The enamel and dentin mineral densities in the extracted teeth were measured using micro-CT. Cubic regression curves were used to determine the mineral density distribution in the enamel and dentin for each tooth type. RESULTS: The mean values, distributions, and regression equations of the mineral densities were obtained. The mean mineral density values for permanent enamel and dentin were significantly higher than those for their primary counterparts for each tooth type. CONCLUSIONS: In the present study, we demonstrated the distribution of mineral density in sound enamel and dentin and attempted to determine the standard mineral density for each tooth type using micro-CT. The mineral density distributions found in this study contribute to our understanding of the mechanical properties of enamel and dentin. A positive correlation suggests that the systemic bone mineral density could be predicted based on the analysis of exfoliated teeth, such as in patients with hypophosphatasia. The present results may be useful in establishing a numerical standard for the mechanism involved in root fracture and for early detection of root fracture risk.

The standard method for measuring the slice thickness of magnetic resonance images uses the inclined surface of a wedge (wedge method); it is sensitive to small increases in noise because of the differentiation of the edge response function (ERF) required. The purpose of this study was to improve the wedge method by fitting a curve to the ERF. The curve-fit function was obtained by convolving an ideal ERF (a ramp function) with a Gaussian function to represent ERF blurring. Measurements of 5- and 3-mm slice thicknesses were performed on a 3T scanner using the conventional wedge method, the improved wedge method, and another standard method using an inclined slab (slab method). Subsequently, 0.5- and 0.25-mm slice thicknesses from multiple slices acquired using a three-dimensional sequence were measured using the improved wedge method. When measuring 5-mm slices, the differences in measurements obtained using the improved wedge method and the conventional slab and wedge methods were very small: <0.6% of the 5-mm slice thickness. The difference was ≤1.7% for 3-mm slices. For 0.5- and 0.25-mm slices, the mean values obtained using the improved wedge method were 0.543 ± 0.007 mm and 0.247 ± 0.015 mm, with a 1.2 and 5.9% coefficient of variation across slices, respectively. The improved wedge method is valid and potentially applicable to the measurement of sub-millimeter slice thicknesses.

The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) functions as the primary restraint to posterior tibial movement and the stabilizer for axial rotation of the knee joint. It is, therefore, important to know the mechanical characteristics of the PCL. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vivo characteristics of the three-dimensional (3D) deformation and orientation of the PCL during knee flexion using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Ten normal knees were visualized using MRI at full extension (FE), 10°, 20°, 30° and 60° of static knee flexion. The length, strain, elevation and deviation of the PCL were measured using the 3D models of the femur, tibia and PCL reconstructed from the MR images. The PCL length was measured in three portions (Medial: M, Central: C, Lateral: L) to consider its 3D shape. Tendencies of the PCL elongation and strain during knee flexion were different among these 3 portions. The PCL length in M portion was shortest in 10° or 20° and extended in FE and 60°. The PCL length in L portion, on the other hand, extended from FE to 60°. These 3D deformation characteristics were consisted with the changes in the elevation and deviation of the PCL during knee flexion.

The purpose of the present study was to develop a novel-designed phantom that could be scanned with a sample in the same image, that specialize for quantitative analyses of human dentin mineral density using the X-ray attenuation method. A further attempt was made to demonstrate the intracoronal dentin mineral density using this phantom in mandibular incisors. The phantom prepared with a 15 mm hole in the center of an acrylic resin bar having an outside diameter of 25 mm and 8 small holes (diameter, 3 mm) were made at equal intervals around the center. Liquid dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (K2HPO4) solutions were established at 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 g/cm3, and were arranged to these holes. The mean value of the intracoronal dentin mineral density was 1.486 ± 0.016 g/cm3 in the present study. As the results of the present study corresponded to previous reports, this new phantom was considered to be useful. This phantom enables the analysis of samples that are not readily available by conventional mechanical tests and may facilitate biomechanical investigations using X-ray images. It was suggested that this system is a simple, accurate and novel mineralization measuring system.

The proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint of the finger are formed by the articulation between the proximal phalanges head (PPH) and the middle phalanges base (MPB). The PPH has two rounded condyles, separated by a shallow central groove. The opposing surface of the MPB has two shallow concave facets separated by a central ridge. Determination of distribution of joint contact and joint motion are necessary to understanding the progression of joint deterioration and to the design of appropriate implants for finger joint arthroplasty. Traditionally, such data have been obtained from in vitro study of cadaveric specimens. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has recently been shown to be a valid method of quantifying the joint contact area, indicating the potential for in vivo assessment. In the present study, we adapted an MRI system to study the three-dimensional in vivo articular cartilage contact areas and contact distributions of the PIP joint of the index finger on adopting three flexion angles.

A three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis method of the knee joint was developed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evaluate ligament deformation due to knee joint motion. A two-dimensional (2D) multi-slice cine image of the knee joint in motion and a 3D image of the knee joint at rest were acquired in this method. The bone position was identified through the registration of each image. Patellar tendon relaxation and tension were evaluated using the 2D multi-slice cine images. In addition, a method to construct a knee joint coordinate system, which is important for motion analysis is developed using the MR images of the entire length of the lower limb. The MR image composing was found useful for constructing a bone coordinate system.

To understand biomechanics in lower extremity joints, static joint alignment under weight-bearing conditions and the relationship between knee joint motion and joint structure were investigated. In osteoarthritic knees with varus and valgus deformations, the passing position of ground reaction force was significantly posteriorly at the knee joint. There was no obvious difference in knee motion under loading before and after anterior cruciate ligament injury. In the total replacement knee joints, the component geometry defined the amount of sliding and relative motion at the joint. In order to accurately measure the posterior tilt, which is a characteristic of the proximal tibial articular surface structure, a semi-automatic method for estimating the joint range was presented.
