    Design and operation of unbaffled aerated agitated vessels with multiple unsteadily forward-reverse rotating impellers (AJITERs) for viscous Newtonian liquids were studied. The effects of operating conditions such as gas sparging rate, agitation rate and the number of impeller stages, geometrical conditions such as the diameters of vessel and impeller, and the physical properties of liquids on the drag and added moment of inertia coefficients, necessary to predict the average and maximum power consumptions of the impellers in AJITERs, were evaluated and the empirical relationships which estimate values of each of these coefficients are presented. The effects of operating conditions, geometrical conditions and liquid physical properties on the gas hold-up, phi(gD), and volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient, k(L)a(D), were evaluated in relation to the total power input which is the sum of the average power consumption of impellers, ie average agitation power input, and aeration power input. Empirical relationships, useful for design and operation of AJITERs, were obtained for each viscosity range, where the dependences of phi(gD) and k(L)a(D) on the specific total power input and superficial gas velocity differed, to predict phi(gD) and k(L)a(D) respectively as a function of the specific total power input, superficial gas velocity and liquid physical properties.     To evaluate whether green tea consumption provides protection against stomach cancer death, relative risks were calculated using Cox proportional hazards regression analysis in the Japan Collaborative Study for Evaluation of Cancer Risk, sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (JACC Study). The study was based on 30 370 men and 42481 women aged 40-79. After adjustment for age, smoking status, history of peptic ulcer, family history of stomach cancer along with certain dietary items, the risks associated with drinking one or two, three or four, five to nine, and 10 or more cups of green tea per day, relative to those of drinking less than one cup per day, were 1.6 (95% Cl: 0.9 - 2.9), 1.1 (95% Cl: 0.6 - 1.9), 1.0 (95% Cl: 0.5 2,0), and 1.0 (95% Cl: 0.5 - 2.0), respectively, in men (P for trend=0.669), and 1.1 (95% Cl: 0.5 - 2.5), 1.0 (95% Cl: 0.5 - 2.5), 0.8 (95% Cl: 0.4 - 1.6), and 0.8 (95% Cl: 0.3-2.1), respectively, in women (P for trend=0.488). We found no inverse association between green tea consumption and the risk of stomach cancer death. (C) 2002 Cancer Research UK.

    Disinfection kinetics of Legionella pneumophila by ultraviolet irradiation was investigated. The change in viable cell concentration with exposure time could be divided into three steps: lag step in which little change in viable cell concentration was observed, fast disinfection step and slow disinfection step. The slow disinfection step was not observed at the initial cell concentrations below about 10(6) cfu/mL. The disinfection kinetics were well described with two parameters; lag time and disinfection rate constant of the fast disinfection step. The effects of UV intensity, temperature and initial cell concentration in the kinetic parameters were investigated. With increasing initial cell concentration, the lag time decreased and the disinfection rate constant increased. The effects of initial cell concentration on the kinetic parameters were considered to be attributed to the decrease in the effective UV irradiation intensity due to the partial shield of UV light by the disinfected cells. The empirical correlations were presented for predicting the lag time and disinfection rate constant. Furthermore, UV disinfection of L. pneuophila in a model hot-tub connected with external irradiation chamber was also discussed.

    A new oxygen supply method to biofilm is proposed for simultaneous organic carbon removal and nitrification. The main feature of the method is use of hydrophobic porous membrane or oxygen enrichment membrane as substratum of biofilm. In the biofilm formed on oxygen permeable membrane, oxygen is supplied from the bottom to the surface of the biofilm through the membrane while organic pollutants are supplied from the surface to the bottom of the biofilm. The oxygen supply method allows nitrifiers near the bottom region to grow with less competition from BOD oxidizers. The microbial population was investigated in the biofilm formed on hydrophobic microfilter. Nitrifiers grew mainly in the bottom region while denitrifiers grew in the middle region of the biofilm formed on the membrane. Simultaneous organic carbon removal and nitrification were carried out successfully by the biofilm. Furthermore, the potential of the new oxygen supply method was demonstrated with the biofilm formed on an oxygen enrichment-type biomass carrier in a single-stage treatment of domestic wastewater. The nitrification rate was about 1.9 g/m(2)d and was comparable to that in the conventional biofilm process designed especially for nitrification. (C) 1998 IAWQ. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

    Barium alginate gel was a suitable matrix, with low oxygen permeability, for the immobilization of denitrifier. The mechanical compression strength of the Ba alginate gel was higher than that of the Ca alginate gel. At O-2 concentrations up to 2 mg/L, the denitrification rate constant of the Ba alginate immobilized denitrifier was about 90% of that of the free denitrifier under anoxic condition.

    Gas hold-up and volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient were studied in a gas-liquid contactor without baffles, containing multiple impellers with four delta-type blades. The blades of each adjacent impeller were offset by 45 degrees in an alternating manner. The direction of rotation of the impellers periodically was reversed. This new type of agitated gas-liquid contactor was denoted as ''AJITER''. The effects of the gas sparging rate, the forward-reverse agitation rate and the number of impellers on the gas hold-up and volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient in the AJITER when different types of gas spargers were used were evaluated experimentally for an air-water system. Empirical relationships are presented to predict the gas hold-up and volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient. The differences in performance between the AJITER and existing types of gas-liquid contactors are discussed in terms of the differences in the gas hold-up and volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient due to changes in the superficial gas velocity.

    Experimental measurements of the gas hold-up and volumetric mass transfer coefficient have been made for bubble columns (BCs) treating various foaming liquids under mechanical and chemical foam control. The gas hold-up and the volumetric mass transfer coefficient in a mechanical foam-control system (BCs with rotating-disk mechanical foam-breakers) were larger than those in a chemical foam-control system (BCs with an antifoam agent added). Correlations for the gas hold-up and the volumetric mass transfer coefficient in BCs under foam control are presented. Comparison of the volumetric mass transfer coefficient between the mechanical foam-control system and the chemical foam-control system in terms of the specific power input also demonstrated higher mass transfer performance and saving power requirements for the mechanical foam-control system.

    Dependencies of effective diffusivity of glucose in Ca-alginate gel beads and mechanical compression strength of the gel on alginate composition, viscosity, concentration, temperature and pk of the alginate solution were systematically investigated, Diffusional and mechanical properties of Ca-alginate gel beads depended on alginate composition and the gelling conditions, The results were discussed in relation to gel structure and conformation of alginate molecule. Differences in reported diffusivities of glucose could be explained by the differences in alginate composition and the gelling conditions such as alginate concentration, temperature and pH. Furthermore, selection guidelines for preparation of Ca-alginate gel having low diffusional obstruction and large compression strength were presented.

    Simultaneous removal of total organic carbon (TOC) and nitrogen (T-N) by a plunging liquid jet bioreactor was investigated for small-scale treatment of domestic wastewater. The bioreactor was operated under suspended growth and attached growth conditions and intermittent aeration to carry out both nitrification and denitrification processes in one vessel. In the suspended growth system, TOC removal efficiency was about 90% but nitrogen removal was about 50%. The nitrogen removal was not sufficient because nitrification was a rate-limiting step. To overcome this limitation, a biomass carrier was inserted in the reactor. In the attached growth system, nitrification proceeded almost completely and, hence, nitrogen removal was increased. TOC and nitrogen removal efficiency was 97% (effluent TOC concentration was about 3·0 mg/l) and 84% (effluent T-N concentration was about 2·0 mg/l) in the oxic periods, respectively, and those were 93% (TOC concentration was about 5·5 mg/l) and 90% (T-N concentration was about 1·2 mg/l) in the anoxic periods. This effluent T-N concentration satisfies the severest target value for T-N discharge concentration in small-scale domestic wastewater treatment in Japan. The bioreactor system with the biomass carrier operated under intermittent aeration was judged to be excellent for simultaneous removal of TOC and nitrogen in small-scale treatment of domestic wastewater. © 1995.

    A new energy-saving membrane bioreactor was developed and applied to biological treatment of wastewater. The reactor used air entrainment by a plunging liquid jet for aeration and membrane filtration for solid-liquid separation. The major feature of the bioreactor was that the membrane module was incorporated into the liquid circulation line for the formation of the liquid jet so that the operations of aeration and membrane separation could both be accomplished using only one pump. Air entrainment and oxygen transfer characteristics of the reactor were investigated. Wastewater treatment by the bioreactor was carried out successfully with the TOC removal efficiency above 97%. The TOC removal efficiency of the cake layer deposit on the ceramic microfilter was comparable to that of the suspended micro-organisms in the aeration tank. The role of the cake layer was evaluated in terms of facility of operation. The results obtained show that the bioreactor system has considerable potential for the biological treatment of small-scale agricultural or domestic wastewater discharged in rural or sparsely populated areas.
