Sufficient and necessary conditions for an aggregative game to have a unique Nash equilibrium are identified. In particular, an improvement of a result of Gaudet and Salant (1991) for Cournot oligopolies is obtained. The results are proved by exploiting the general relation between Nash equilibria and fixed points of the (virtual) aggregate cumulative best reply correspondence.

If an aggregative game satisfies the generalized Hahn conditions, then there exists a unique Nash equilibrium which may not be interior and is globally asymptotically stable under two alternative continuous adjustment processes with non-negativity constraints.

This article proves that if each player's measure of absolute risk aversion is nonincreasing in his/her wealth, then there exists a unique pure-strategy Nash equilibrium in the general rent-seeking game, where risk-averse players can coexist with risk-neutral players, attitude toward risk can differ among players, and concave production functions for lotteries are not necessarily the same among players.

A sufficient condition is derived for the global stability of a unique interior Nash equilibrium in an aggregative game. The condition is applied to investigate the global stability of the Nash - Cournot equilibrium in Cournot oligopoly without product differentiation and that of the Nash equilibrium in rent-seeking games. There can be three types of heterogeneity among players in a rent-seeking contest. First, effectiveness of player's effort on the winning probabilities may differ among players. Secondly, players may evaluate the rent or prize of the rent-seeking contest differently. Thirdly, players may face different financial constraints. This article proves under standard assumptions in the literature that there exists a unique pure-strategy Nash equilibrium in a general asymmetric rent-seeking contest with these three types of heterogeneity among players.

We analyze the global stability of the equilibria in Bertrand and Cournot duopolies. Assuming a set of sufficient conditions for the global stability of the Bertrand duopoly equilibrium, we derive additional conditions which are sufficient for the global stability of the Cournot duopoly equilibrium. We use the relationships among the first and second order partial derivatives of the ordinary and inverse demand functions in deriving our results.

If domestic firms lobby for protection, the tariff rate is a public good to all domestic firms, whether they engage in lobbying or not. This paper analyzes how the endogenous tariff rate as a public good depends on the group size in two-stage lobbying models. The result depends not only on whether domestic firms lobby cooperatively or not, but also on whether domestic firms incur indirect lobbying costs or not. This paper shows that if free riding is not very serious and if the number of domestic firms is small compared to the number of foreign firms, entry of a domestic firm is likely to increase the equilibrium tariff rate. © Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2004.

First, we analyze the effects of a shift from specific to ad valorem taxation within Cournot oligopoly under general conditions on demand and cost functions. Second, we analyze the optimal Pigouvian tax rate for controlling emission of pollution within Cournot oligopoly also under general conditions. The second analysis is an adaptation of the analytical method adopted in the first analysis.

A hierarchical Stackelberg model where firms' entry is sequential is formulated for price-adjusting oligopoly with product differentiation. The firms' equilibrium prices, outputs and profits are derived and compared in relationship to the order of the firms' entry into the market. These equilibrium values are also compared with those for the non-hierarchical Bertrand oligopoly where all firms' decisions are simultaneously made.
