    It is hoped that female researchers will become leading figures in future technology, but, the percentage of young women currently entering faculties of science and technology, here in Japan, is much lower than that seen in similar faculties, in other advanced countries. Niigata University is developing a lecture-series with a twist; it will be presented by a graduate student, for the express purpose of stimulating interest in Science and Technology among junior high school girls. From replies given to survey-questions, we analyzed the relationship between lectors' gender and course-selection.

    To cultivate female students in science and technology (engineering) is one of the important subjects in universities, which have the role in the human resource development for next generation. As a good practice for this subject, we have made science seminar by female graduate students for senior and junior high school students. The primal purpose of this seminar is to eliminate their latent anxiety and prejudice that women are not suited for science and engineering fields. Here we report the contents of "the science seminar by the female graduate students" in Niigata University and its effects on both female senior school and junior high school students and female graduate students. Moreover we compare it with several similar activities in other universities, and discuss advantages and disadvantages of the activities.

    In the framework of a pure SU(2) lattice gauge-Higgs unification scenario, we find a. new global symmetry on a Z(2)-orbifolded five-dimensional space. The global symmetry is consistently realized with the Z(2)-orbifolding, independent of the bulk gauge symmetry. It is shown that the vacuum expectation value of a Z(2)-projected Polyakov loop is a good order parameter for the new symmetry. The effective theory on lattice is also discussed.

    We present a new formulation of a staggered fermion on a D-dimensional lattice based on the SO(2D] Clifford algebra, which is naturally contained in the action. The action of a massless staggered fermion is invariant under discrete rotations and SO(2D) chiral and other discrete transformations. From the transformation properties of the fermion, we find two local meson operators (one scalar and one pseudoscalar), in addition to two standard meson operators.

    Extra dimensionを持つ理論のもっとも簡単な模型として,S_1 compact化した5D pure SU(2) Yang-Mills理論を格子MCシミュレーションにより非摂動的に解析した.格子MCシミュレーションによる解析が物理的に意味を持つのは,その格子間隔に物理的なスケールを持たせることが出来る場合であり,連続極限の存在が必要である.5D pure SU(2) YM理論はもともと,摂動論的には繰り込み不可能であるが,4次元からのε-展開によって,non-trivial fixed pointが存在する可能性がある.これまでのMCの解析では,この系には1次相転移しか見つかっていないが,この理論で1次元方向をS_1にcompact化した場合には,その際に導入される非等方パラメータで理論空間を拡張することによって,MCシミュレーションとβ関数の非摂動計算により連続極限の存在を間接的に示す結果を得た.また,4次元で起きる'閉じ込め'という性質が壊れないような5次元方向の半径の最大値はR_<max>〜0.1/√<σ_<phys>>程度であると予想される.

    We study various representations of infrared effective theory of SU(2) gluodynamics as a (quantum) perfect lattice action. In particular we derive a monopole action and a string model of hadrons from SU(2) gluodynamics. These are lattice actions which give almost cutoff independent physical quantities even on coarse lattices. The monopole action is determined by numerical simulations in the infrared region of SU(2) gluodynamics. The string model of hadrons is derived from the monopole action by using BKT transformation. We illustrate the method and evaluate physical quantities such as the string tension and the mass of the lowest state of the glueball analytically using the string model of hadrons. It turns out that the classical results in the string model are near to the one in quantum SU(2) gluodynamics.

    We study the perfect monopole action and string model as an infrared effective theory of SU(2) QCD. It is transformed exactly into a lattice string model. The strong coupling expansion of string model shows that the quantum fluctuation is small. The classical string tension and the glueball mass are estimated analytically, and we see that it is very close to the quantum one in the SU(2) QCD.

    Pure lattice (Formula presented) Yang-Mills theory in five dimensions is considered, where an extra dimension is compactified on a circle. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the theory possesses a continuum limit with a nonvanishing string tension if the compactification radius is smaller than a certain value (Formula presented) which is (Formula presented) of the inverse of the square root of the string tension. We verify nonperturbatively the power-law running of the gauge coupling constant. Our method can be applied to the investigation of continuum limits in other higher-dimensional gauge theories. © 2000 The American Physical Society.

    We study the perfect lattice actions of abelian-projected SU(2) gluodynamics. Using the BKT and duality transformations on the lattice, an effective string model is derived from the direction-dependent quadratic monopole action, obtained numerically from SU(2) gluodynamics in maximally abelian gauge. The string tension and the restoration of continuum rotational invariance are investigated using strong coupling expansion of lattice string model analytically. We also found that the block spin transformation can be performed analytically for the quadratic monopole action.

    In an SU(2) lattice gauge theory with a Z2 orbifolded extra dimension, the<br />
    new symmetry which is called as a stick symmetry is useful in understanding the<br />
    bulk transition. We discuss the relation with the Fradkin-Shenker&#039;s phase<br />
    diagram as well. A remnant of the extra dimension is remained as two U(1) gauge<br />
    symmetries in two 4-dimensional spaces. We also consider more general bulk<br />
    gauge groups beyond SU(2).

    A five-dimensional lattice space can be decomposed into a number of<br />
    four-dimens ional lattices called as layers. The five-dimensional gauge theory<br />
    on the lattice can be interpreted as four-dimensional gauge theories on the<br />
    multi-layer with interactions between neighboring layers. In the theory, there<br />
    exist two independent coupling constants; $\beta_4$ controls the dynamics<br />
    inside a layer and $\beta_5$ does the strength of the inter-layer<br />
    interaction.We propose the new possibility to realize the continuum limit of a<br />
    five-dimensional theory using four-dimensional dynamics with large $\beta_4$<br />
    and small $\beta_5$. Our result is also related to the higher dimensional<br />
    theory by deconstruction approach.

    In this study, the aim of the development of graduate education program to train scientists that can convey clearly the science, conducted the following two studies with particular attention to gender. 1) Survey on current status of science communication education of graduate students, 2) Survey of attention of students to behavior of lecturer in science lecture.
    In 1), the degree of recognition of scientific communication is low, but it has been suggested that the graduate students who have many practical experiences equivalent to scientific communication may be more aware of society. In 2), female students who have taken a science lecture by a graduate student are generally more evenly aware of the lecturer's behavior (voice size, intonation, tone, gestures, ways of asking questions, eyes) than male students.
