This is a continuation research into the evaluation of the revised English language education curriculum at Niigata University, Japan. In this paper, the author attempted to evaluate the curriculum for the academic years of 2015 and 2016, by using the same types of data which had been used for the original 2011 - 2014 study: TOEIC IP scores, hours spent out-of-class in e-learning, student evaluation of classes, teacher assessment of student achievement, and class size. The overall positive effect of the revised curriculum was again suggested by the TOEIC results and the amount of hours spent on e-learning. The findings also revealed the need to improve reading classes in general, to promote effective self-directed learning, and to standardize teacher assessment of student achievement in class.

This paper reports on an evaluation of the revised English language education curriculum at Niigata University, Japan, using the following data: TOEIC IP scores, test results from the National Center for University Entrance Examination, hours spent out-of-class in e-learning, student evaluation of classes, teacher assessment of student achievement, and class size. The overall positive effect of the revised curriculum was verified to a certain degree by the TOEIC results and the number of hours spent on e-learning. The necessity of streaming classes was also confirmed. This research also found that students seemed to lack knowledge of self-directed learning strategies, and that they tended to be less satisfied with reading classes in general. In addition, the findings suggested the need for more standardized assessment of student achievement in class, in order to provide a more accurate evaluation of future curricula.

This article reports on the ongoing research into the effectiveness of a semesterlong, university EGAP course in Japan, which was designed to improve first-year students' reading ability of expository texts, by drawing upon previous studies on working memory. After two years through the implementation of graphic organizers, graded readers and a vocabulary program, the course seems to have repeatedly produced a meaningful improvement in learners' general reading ability of expository texts.

This paper introduces a university EGAP course in Japan, which was designed to improve first-year students' reading ability of expository texts, by drawing on previous studies on the functions of working memory. In a semester-long class, the students were exposed to basic discourse structures often found in authentic texts, through the use of graphic organizers. As homework, extensive reading and vocabulary e-learning assignments were given in order to promote automaticity in the processing of words and sentence structures, as well as to expand their vocabulary. The result suggests a meaningful improvement in their general reading ability of expository texts.

This project used English books for beginners, known as 'Graded Readers', to create an corpus so that Data Driven Learning (DDL) could be used to enhance the vocabulary and grammar of beginning students, as well as improve their reading speeds within an Extensive Reading (ER) program. Multiple cycles of testing discovered that, in terms of lexicogrammatical proficiency, overall no statistical difference between the experimental and control groups could be found. However, the experimental groups significantly improved more than the control group in terms of reading speed and total words read.

In recent English language education in Japan, notably at the tertiary level, there has been an inclination to avoid the use of literature as a resource for the creation of teaching material and tests. However, teachers indeed seem to recognize the significance of exploiting literary works in classrooms. In the absence of sufficient research to support their intuitive insight, our research aimed first to describe unique properties of literary text by comparing original works with their retold versions, and then to present specific guidelines for producing teaching material based on the findings. Overall, our goal was achieved to the extent that the outcomes would provide the foundation for further research.
