This paper develops a validated numerical algorithm to compute the LOO-norm, a norm which plays an important role in modern control. The method reduces the Loo-norm Computation problem to real root localization of polynomials and some Sturm chain tests, both of which can be executed in a manner which guarantees accuracy. A computational complexity estimate is also given. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper an algorithm with guaranteed accuracy is developed for the SISO <I>H</I>2 optimal tracking problem for a step reference signal. The algorithm utilizes a computer algebra system and interval arithmetic for the achievement of a stringent requirement of guaranteed accuracy. It also makes use of some strucural properties of the solution to the problem in order to facilitate guaranteed accuracy computation. This paper first derives a general expression for the solution to the SISO <I>H</I>2 tracking problem, revealing some features of the solution useful for guaranteed accuracy computation. Then a guaranteed accuracy algorithm which computes the optimal cost and the controller that accomplishes it is developed by exploiting the features along with some tools for guaranteed accuracy computation. Numerical examples are used to demonstrate the algorithm.

In this paper, we evaluate the stability margin of a Fiat Dedra engine model to explore possible applications of theoretical achievements in the parametric approach to robust control problems. The study is based on two versions of the model with uncertainties. One is the original model, which has a multilinear characteristic polynomial, while the other is an affine-linearized model which is obtained by the affine linearization technique proposed in this paper. By applying some newly developed theoretical tools in the literature, the stability margins of the affine-linearized model in terms of the rho(infinity). norm and the rho(2) norm and the stability margin of the original model in terms of the rho(infinity). norm are obtained.

This research project is concerned with analysis of the best achievable performance level of vibration attenuation by means of passive mechanical networks, with the use of the inerter, a recently invented passive mechanical element, in mind. It has been shown that the inerter may improve the performance when measured in terms of the H2 norm or H-infinity norm but that the improvement can be marginal for a system with a soft spring. Also, it is shown that the inerter may be beneficial when there is a constraint on the travel of the vibration absorption part. An algebraic method is developed that tunes system parameters in order to optimize the H-infinity performance. Moreover, the notion of `average damping ratio' is introduced, and it is shown that the quantity can algebraically be characterized, which further leads to an approach that minimizes the H2 performance under a constraint on the average damping ratio.

A symbolic-numeric hybrid optimization approach is proposed for the plant/controller integrated design problem. The approach effectively combines the merits of both algebraic methods and numerical optimization techniques. An algebraic approach for polynomial spectral factorization in the delta domain is further developed that enables sensitivity analysis against parameters including the sampling period, which expands the applicability of the proposed hybrid optimization approach.
