<title>Abstract</title>
This qualitative and quantitative study applies conversation analytic methodology to the examination of mutual
intelligibility, and then quantifies the segmental repairs and segmental adjustments that were required to maintain
intelligibility in English as a Lingua Franca interactions among students at a Japanese university. In the qualitative portion,
sequential analysis was used to ascertain the segmental repairs that were utilized to maintain mutual intelligibility and to
identify the pronunciations that interactants oriented to as unintelligible and intelligible, which can then be compared to
determine the segmental adjustments that changed an unintelligible pronunciation into an intelligible one. In the quantitative
portion, the segmental repairs and the segmental adjustments were quantified in order to assess which kinds of segmental repairs
and segmental adjustments are most frequent. This study concludes that reactive repair is the most frequent segmental repair, and
modification is the most frequent segmental adjustment.

This is a qualitative study of the relationship between consonant deletion, consonant insertion, and the pragmatic strategies that maintain mutual intelligibility in English as a Lingua Franca (hereafter, ELF) interactions among university and exchange students at a Japanese university (Jenkins, 2000; Matsumoto, 2011; O'Neal, 2015). Some ELF research claims that consonant deletion attenuates mutual intelligibility in ELF interactions, especially if the consonant deletion occurs in word-initial and word-medial consonant clusters or in consonant clusters in syllable onsets and codas (Jenkins, 2000, 2007; Deterding, 2013). This study assesses the effect of consonant deletion and consonant insertion on the mutual intelligibility of pronunciation in ELF interactions in Japan. Using conversation analytic methodology to examine a corpus of miscommunications among ELF speakers at a Japanese university, within which miscommunications are defined as repair sequences, this study claims that consonant deletion can attenuate mutual intelligibility, and that the insertion of a deleted consonant into a word can help restore mutual intelligibility. Furthermore, this is true regardless of deviance from or approximation to a native speaker pronunciation standard. This study concludes that segmental repair is an effective strategy with which English speakers can maintain mutual intelligibility. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This is a qualitative study of the relationship between consonant cluster articulation and intelligibility in English as a Lingua Franca interactions in Japan (Jenkins 2000; Matsumoto 2011). Some research has claimed that the full articulation of consonant clusters in lexeme-initial and lexeme-medial position is critical to the maintenance of intelligibility (Jenkins 2000, 2002, 2007; Walker 2010; Deterding 2013). Using conversation analytic methodology to examine a corpus of repair sequences in interactions among English as a Lingua Franca speakers at a Japanese university, this study claims that consonant elision in consonant clusters in lexeme-initial, lexeme-medial, and lexeme-final position can attenuate intelligibility, and that the insertion of an elided consonant into a word that was oriented to as unintelligible can help restore intelligibility in English as a Lingua Franca.
