Abstract

The late Miocene‐early Pliocene (7.4‐4.5 Ma) is a key interval in Earth's history where intense reorganization of atmospheric and ocean circulation occurred within a global cooling scenario. The Southern African monsoon (SAFM) potentially played an important role in climate systems variability during this interval. However, the dynamics of this important atmospheric system is poorly understood due to the scarcity of continuous records. Here, we present an exceptional continuous late Miocene to early Pliocene reconstruction of SAFM based on elemental geochemistry (Ca/Ti and Si/K ratios), stable isotope geochemistry (δ18O and δ13C recorded in the planktonic foraminiferaOrbulina universa), and marine sediment grain size data from the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1476 located at the entrance of the Mozambique Channel. Spectral characteristics of the Si/K ratio (fluvial input) was used to identify the main orbital forcing controlling SAFM. Precession cycles governed precipitation from 7.4 to ∼6.9 Ma and during the early Pliocene. From ∼6.9 to ∼5.9 Ma, the precession and long eccentricity cycles drove the SAFM. The major Antarctic ice sheet expansion across this interval appear to influence the isotopic records ofO. universaimprinting its long‐term variability signal as a response to the ocean and atmospheric reorganization. Precession cycles markedly weakened from 5.9 to 5.3 Ma, almost the same period when the Mediterranean Outflow Water ceased. These findings highlight important teleconnections among the SAFM, Mediterranean Sea, and other tropical regions.

Extensive research has been conducted on tsunamigenic deposits along the eastern margin of the Japan Sea since the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and tsunami. This paper reviews the characteristics of the large known tsunamis and the possible tsunamigenic deposits identified in this region. We have also reconstructed the spatio-temporal distribution, and a provisional correlation, of the tsunamigenic deposits in order to estimate the tsunami recurrence intervals and their wave source regions.

Most of the tsunamigenic deposits were recognized in peaty and marshy deposits found on swales of coastal dunes, flood plains, and small valley plains. Large numbers of tsunamigenic sandy layers were also identified in lagoonal deposits. In addition, some gravelly deposits of possible tsunamigenic were recognized on top of low-lying marine terraces and slope talus.

Although several historical tsunamis in the 18-19th centuries have been recorded along the eastern margin of the Japan Sea, there are few localities where deposits can be correlated to these records. Tsunamigenic deposits suggest that four tsunami events have occurred during the 9-14th centuries, despite there being limited historical records of tsunamis older than the 18th century. The distribution of these four deposits is as follows: 14th century = Aomori-northern Yamagata; 12th century = southwestern Hokkaido; 11th century (?1092 AD) = Sado/Niigata-southern Yamagata; 9th century (?850 AD) = (Sado)-Yamagata-Aomori. These events are also recorded in the deep-sea Japan Basin as seismo-turbidites. Most tsunamigenic deposits older than the 9th century have only been identified at remote islands (Okushiri, Tobishima, and Sado).

Several unanswered research questions on these tsunamigenic deposits remain, such as robust identification of the origins and precise ages of the deposits. Our work provides a framework for future screening of potential tsunamigenic deposit data and an improved understanding of paleotsunami events along the eastern margin of the Japan Sea.

A characteristic sandy event layer, probably resulting from a 17th-century tsunami, was discovered from the coastal sediments in the central part of the Pacific coast (northern Hidaka coast) of Hokkaido, northern Japan. The event layer is intercalated with an organic medium-grained sand layer (called "Kurosuna" in Japanese) and peat. The event layer, which shows thinning and fining trends in an inland direction, is distributed at least 150m inland from the present shoreline and at a height of 3.86m above sea level. Occurrence of the diatom indicator of an outer bay environment Thalassionema nitzschioides marks the event layer. These features indicate that the event layer was formed by a tsunami. The time of the event layer formation is inferred to be in the early to middle 1600s, because the event layer is deposited right below the AD 1663 Us-b tephra, separated by a very thin intervening peat layer.

Okushiri Island, located in southwest Hokkaido, Japan, was hit by an earthquake-generated tsunami in July 1993. An excavation survey revealed several event sand beds, interbedded with peaty sediments, in the lowland at the southernmost part of the island. These beds consist of relatively well-sorted fine- to medium-grained sand similar to sandy shoreline deposits; they are normally graded, fining and thinning landwards. Some beds show partial erosional bases and ripple cross-laminations, implying landward-directed paleocurrents, and grain fabrics also indicate the landward dispersal of clastics. The sand beds yield marine organic-walled microfossils such as dinoflagellate cysts and foraminiferal linings. These findings indicate that the sand beds are of tsunami origin. The results of carbon-14 dating and tephrochronology indicate that at least six tsunami events, including the AD 1741 Oshima-Ohshima and the AD 1993 Hokkaido Nansei-Oki tsunamis, have hit the island over the past 3000-4000 years.

Younger Sand layers (YSLs) have been identified in drill cores of a Late Glacial to Early Holocene muddy contourite succession from the Gulf of Cadiz. In this study, we evaluate the grain size characteristics of the YSL, which display bi-gradational grading, with inverse grading (from silt to fine- or medium-grained sand) followed by normal grading (from fine- or medium-grained sand to silt). Radiocarbon dating shows that the YSL formed at three distinct times: 1) the Bolling-Allerod (sites U1387 and U1386); 2) the Younger Dryas (site U1390), and; 3) the beginning of the Boreal (site U1389). Ichnological analyses and radiocarbon dating of cores from drill site U1389C indicate that the YSLs consist of reworked materials deposited at a high sedimentation rate. The results of sedimentological analyses, ichnological treatment, spatial distributions, and radiocarbon dating of the YSLs suggest that the possibility of an origin of the YSLs is tsunami-related but later reworked by bottom current. However, the source areas of the sandy sediments remain unclear, although our results show them to be variable and area dependent. Some sandy deposits are transported by the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW) from the proximal sector of the Gulf of Cadiz Contourite Depositional System (CDS), which is close to the Strait of Gibraltar. However, in other cases it is more probable that local gravity flows, which are the result of instability on adjacent margins, provide the sandy material. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The development of the latest Pleistocene to Holocene incised valley fill in the Kushiro area, Hokkaido, Japan is investigated in this study. Nine boring core samples drilled in the Kushiro marsh were examined using depositional facies analysis, total sulfur content (TSC) measurement, and radiocarbon dating methods. Based on these methods, 12 depositional facies were recognized including marsh, subaqueous talus, bay-head delta, sand dune, beach, shoreface, barrier sand body, drowned valley-central basin, salt marsh, fluvial, pond, and pyroclastic deposits. The incised valley fill forms a depositional sequence primarily controlled by glacio-eustatic sea-level changes. The lowstand systems tract is composed of river deposits. The transgressive systems tract includes salt marsh, drowned-valley fill central basin, bay-head delta, barrier sand body, central basin, and subaqueous talus deposits. The highstand systems tract is composed of barrier sand body, shoreface, beach, sand dune, central basin bay-head delta, marsh, salt marsh, subaqueous talus, fluvial, and pond facies. Radiocarbon dating analysis indicates that the period of maximum marine flooding was around 7 ka cal. BP. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and INQUA. All rights reserved.

  • New parameter of roundness R: circularity corrected by aspect ratio Reviewed

In this paper, we propose a new roundness parameter R, to denote circularity corrected by aspect ratio. The basic concept of this new roundness parameter is given by the following equation:
R = Circularity + (Circularity (perfect circle) Circularity (aspect ratio))
where Circularity(perfect circle) is the maximum value of circularity and Circularity(aspect ratio) is the circularity when only the aspect ratio varies from that of a perfect circle. Based on tests of digital circle and ellipse images using ImageJ software, the effective sizes and aspect ratios of such images for the calculation of R were found to range between 100 and 1024 pixels, and 10: 1 to 10: 10, respectively. R is thus given by
    R = C-I + (0.913-C-AR)
where CI is the circularity measured using ImageJ software and C-AR is the sixth-degree function of the aspect ratio measured using the same software. The correlation coefficient between the new parameter R and Krumbein's roundness is 0.937 (adjusted coefficient of determination = 0.874). Results from the application of R to modern beach and slope deposits showed that R is able to quantitatively separate both types of material in terms of roundness. Therefore, we believe that the new roundness parameter R will be useful for performing precise statistical analyses of the roundness of particles in the future.

We produced a composite depth scale and chronology for Site U1385 on the SW Iberian Margin. Using log(Ca/Ti) measured by core scanning XRF at 1-cm resolution in all holes, a composite section was constructed to 166.5 meter composite depth (mcd) that corrects for stretching and squeezing in each core. Oxygen isotopes of benthic foraminifera were correlated to a stacked 8180 reference signal (LR04) to produce an oxygen isotope stratigraphy and age model.
Variations in sediment color contain very strong precession signals at Site U1385, and the amplitude modulation of these cycles provides a powerful tool for developing an orbitally-tuned age model. We tuned the U1385 record by correlating peaks in L* to the local summer insolation maxima at 37 degrees N. The benthic 8180 record of Site U1385, when placed on the tuned age model, generally agrees with other time scales within their respective chronologic uncertainties.
The age model is transferred to down-core data to produce a continuous time series of log(Ca/Ti) that reflect relative changes of biogenic carbonate and detrital sediment. Biogenic carbonate increases during interglacial and interstadial climate states and decreases during glacial and stadial periods. Much of the variance in the log(Ca/Ti) is explained by a linear combination of orbital frequencies (precession, tilt and eccentricity), whereas the residual signal reflects suborbital climate variability. The strong correlation between suborbital log(Ca/Ti) variability and Greenland temperature over the last glacial cycle at Site U1385 suggests that this signal can be used as a proxy for millennial-scale climate variability over the past 1.5 Ma.
Millennial climate variability, as expressed by log(Ca/Ti) at Site U1385, was a persistent feature of glacial climates over the past 1.5 Ma, including glacial periods of the early Pleistocene ('41-1cyr world') when boundary conditions differed significantly from those of the late Pleistocene ('100-kyr world'). Suborbital variability was suppressed during interglacial stages and enhanced during glacial periods, especially when benthic delta O-18 surpassed similar to 3.33.5%. Each glacial inception was marked by appearance of strong millennial variability and each deglaciation was preceded by a terminal stadial event. Suborbital variability may be a symptomatic feature of glacial climate or, alternatively, may play a more active role in the inception and/or termination of glacial cycles. (C) 2015 The Authors. Sediments cored along the southwestern Iberian margin during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 339 provide constraints on Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW) circulation patterns from the Pliocene epoch to the present day. After the Strait of Gibraltar opened (5.33 million years ago), a limited volume of MOW entered the Atlantic. Depositional hiatuses indicate erosion by bottom currents related to higher volumes of MOW circulating into the North Atlantic, beginning in the late Pliocene. The hiatuses coincide with regional tectonic events and changes in global thermohaline circulation (THC). This suggests that MOW influenced Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), THC, and climatic shifts by contributing a component of warm, saline water to northern latitudes while in turn being influenced by plate tectonics.

Characterization of trace fossils in marine core sediments is, most times, difficult due to the weak differentiation between biogenic structures and the host sediment, especially in pelagic and hemipelagic facies. This problem is accentuated where a high degree of bioturbation is associated with composite ichnofabrics. Simple methods are presented here based on modifications to image features such as contrast, brightness, vibrance, saturation, exposure, lightness, and color balance using the software Adobe Photoshop CS6 (Adobe Systems, San Jose, CA, USA) to enhance visibility and thus allow for a better identification of the trace fossils. Adjustments involving brightness, levels and vibrance generally give better results. This approach was applied to marine cores of pelagic and hemipelagic sediments obtained from the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 339, Site U1385. Enhancing the digital images facilitates ichnological analysis through improving the visibility of weakly observed trace fossils, and in some cases revealing traces not detected previously.

IODP Expedition 339 drilled five sites in the Gulf of Cadiz and two off the west Iberian margin (November 2011 to January 2012), and recovered 5.5 km of sediment cores with an average recovery of 86.4 %. The Gulf of Cadiz was targeted for drilling as a key location for the investigation of Mediterranean outflow water (MOW) through the Gibraltar Gateway and its influence on global circulation and climate. It is also a prime area for understanding the effects of tectonic activity on evolution of the Gibraltar Gateway and on margin sedimentation. We penetrated into the Miocene at two different sites and established a strong signal of MOW in the sedimentary record of the Gulf of Cadiz, following the opening of the Gibraltar Gateway. Preliminary results show the initiation of contourite deposition at 4.2-4.5 Ma, although subsequent research will establish whether this dates the onset of MOW. The Pliocene succession, penetrated at four sites, shows low bottom current activity linked with a weak MOW. Significant widespread unconformities, present in all sites but with hiatuses of variable duration, are interpreted as a signal of intensified MOW, coupled with flow confinement. The Quaternary succession shows a much more pronounced phase of contourite drift development, with two periods of MOW intensification separated by a widespread unconformity. Following this, the final phase of drift evolution established the contourite depositional system (CDS) architecture we see today. There is a significant climate control on this evolution of MOW and bottom-current activity. However, from the closure of the Atlantic-Mediterranean gateways in Spain and Morocco just over 6 Ma and the opening of the Gibraltar Gateway at 5.3 Ma, there has been an even stronger tectonic control on margin development, downslope sediment transport and contourite drift evolution. The Gulf of Cadiz is the world's premier contourite laboratory and thus presents an ideal testing ground for the contourite paradigm. Further study of these contourites will allow us to resolve outstanding issues related to depositional processes, drift budgets, and recognition of fossil contourites in the ancient record on shore. The expedition also verified an enormous quantity and extensive distribution of contourite sands that are clean and well sorted. These represent a relatively untapped and important exploration target for potential oil and gas reservoirs. © Author(s) 2013.

This paper reviews previous studies on tsunami deposits in Hokkaido, northern Japan. It presents a bibliography of relevant peerreviewed papers, reports, books, and digital maps. In particular, studies of three 17th Century tsunami deposits (i.e., deposits in the eastern Pacific coast area, deposits in the Iburi coast area related to an unknown earthquake, and deposits of the 1640 Hokkaido Komagatake tsunami), along with the geological features of the deposits, are described in detail to contribute to future tsunami mitigation in Hokkaido. Finally, three areas of research are proposed for future studies on tsunami deposits in Hokkaido: (1) clarification of the tsunami history in unsurveyed areas as part of a paleo-tsunami study, (2) detailed surveys in areas of social infrastructure (e.g., electric power plants, ports and harbors, main roads and railways, industrial and non-industrial waste disposal facilities, water supply network), and (3) identification of trigger events and the precise distribution of 17th Century tsunamis along the Pacific coast of Hokkaido.

A reconstruction of a paleo-tsunami flow recorded on the eastern Iburi coast of Hokkaido, northern Japan, has been undertaken using sedimentological analysis. Here, distance from the coastline positively correlates with average sediment grain sizes (mean and median grain sizes expressed in phi scale) but inversely correlates with the standard deviation of grain-size and thickness of the tsunami deposit layer. Grain-fabric and grain-size data in this area indicate at least three tsunami inundation events, with grain-fabric data for tsunami deposits at survey site 1 indicating that these deposits were formed by inflows with ENE paleo-flow directions. This evidence has enabled a depositional model of a tsunami flowing over coastal sand dunes to be formulated, with the first tsunami flow eroding surficial sediments and ripping up and carrying peat clasts. The majority of the tsunami-related water did not return to the sea; this return flow was prevented by a seaside beach ridge, leading to the formation of wide water bodies along the coast. In addition, repeated tsunami inflows did not cause intensive erosional effects at the bottom of these water bodies, with these bodies eventually disappearing due to underground seepage or evaporation.

A study of the 2011 Tohoku-oki tsunami deposits on the coastal lowland of the Sendai Plain, Japan was carried out along a shore-perpendicular survey line in the Arahama area. Field descriptions and tsunami water depth measurements were complemented by sedimentary analyses, including grain size, grain fabric and diatom analysis. The tsunami deposits show a generally fining-inland trend along the 3.4 km long transect. The depositional facies, grain size analysis and grain fabric data suggest that most of the tsunami deposits were laid down during the tsunami inflow, except at one site. These tsunami deposits are characterized by parallel-laminated or massive sand and silt with pieces of woods, fragments of glass, rip-up mud clasts and an erosional base. Minor backwash deposits overlying the inflow sand layer were only observed on one beach ridge and attributed to the topographic high. Marine diatom species comprised only approximately 2% of the diatom assemblage in tsunami deposits and their content decreased landward. In this study, diatom assemblages were similar in the rice field soil and tsunami layers, suggesting that the muddy fraction of the deposits mainly consists of sediments derived from the tsunami-eroded rice field soil. As a result of soil erosion, the tsunami had a high suspended sediment load. Furthermore, after the first tsunami inundation, seawater left by the tsunami did not drain completely to the sea because of the high coastal beach ridge and/or coastal subsidence due to the massive earthquake. Therefore, strong tsunami outflows to the sea did not occur and these areas were covered by mud deposited from stagnant water. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The late Miocene to Pliocene "Miyazaki Facies": (we use the term "Miyazaki Facies": because it is established in the literature, although it represents the central part of the Miyazaki Group rather than a facies in the sedimentary sense) in the central part of the Miyazaki Group, consists of infill material within a fore-arc basin that morphologically consists of an active hinterland, narrow shelf, steep slope, and continuous gentle slope. The Kamurano Formation, which contains coarse-grained clastic sediments on the slope of the fan delta, is well preserved in the "Miyazaki Facies.": Fifteen depositional facies are recognized in the "Miyazaki Facies": and have been integrated into four facies associations according to the type and nature of flow energy: facies association CR consists of limestone, FL was transported and deposited by fluvial energy, WS by wave and storm energy, and GF by sediment gravity flow. Based on the results of sedimentologic and geologic analyses, a single submarine canyon system (Kamurano Submarine Canyon) was recognized on the continental slope.
During a relative rise in sea level, the fan delta was unable to prograde to the shelf edge, and the shelf was covered with fine sediment. During a relative fall in sea level, however, the narrow width of the shelf (about 2 km) meant that the fan delta was easily able to prograde to the shelf edge and thereby directly provide coarse-grained sediment to the submarine canyon.

A characteristic sandy layer probably resulting from a 17th-century tsunami was discovered in coastal sediments in the central part of the Pacific coast (eastern Iburi coast) of Hokkaido, northern Japan. The sandy layer was identified as of tsunami origin based on the following characteristics. The deposit is 1) distributed at least 20km long and 1-2km wide along the coast ; 2) widely inundated along the river toward the inland ; 3) deposited approximately eight meters at the highest ; 4) shows a fining- and thinning- landward trend, and 5) yields a marine diatom assemblage.
The sandy layer was deposited in the early to mid 1600s. The exact trigger event of this tsunami was not identified in this study. Great subduction-zone earthquake centered off eastern Hokkaido and the 1640 Hokkaido Komagatake eruption are candidate source events for this tsunami.

Two 'anomalous' deposits with well-preserved sedimentary structures were discovered in a drowned valley and in relict barrier sand body deposits in the Furuya Mud and Kyomatsubara Sand of the Upper Pleistocene incised valley fills. The sedimentary features of both deposits are interpreted as 'earthquake-induced tsunami deposits', which were deposited in incised valley fills. The tsunami deposit in the drowned valley (Furuya Mud) is 150 cm thick and shows a contorted structured bed in the lower part and cross-laminated sand in the upper part. The tsunami deposit in barrier sand body (Kyomatsubara Sand) is 270 cm thick and shows structureless sand with mud clasts in the lower part, cross-laminated sand with mud-drapes in the middle part and mud with small wave-ripples in the upper part. Taken together, these sedimentary features suggest a model for the composite succession, which is comprised of three units: a lower earthquake-shock-influenced (anomalous) convoluted part, a middle part dominated by tsunami-generated tractional currents, and an upper suspended-sediment part. The lower part is interpreted as earthquake event deposits (seismites) and the middle and upper parts as tsunami current deposits (tsunamiites). (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The Makinohara Upland, central west Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan, faces the Suruga Trough, which is formed by the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the Eurasia Plate. The Upper Pleistocene of the Makinohara Upland consists of incised valley fills, which comprises a depositional sequence. Compositional trends of the sands from the Makinohara Upland area (Makinohara sands) are plotted in the Lt-rich field, within the lithic recycled-transitional field of Dickinson and Seely (1979) and Dickinson et al. (1983). The sands of the Makinohara Upland area and Kanto area show mineralogically immature trend than those of the U.S.A. (continental area). The Makinohara sands are deposited in fluvial environments during lowstand and highstand periods, and respectively have different plots on Qm-Fl-Lt and Ma (grain-size) versus Qm/(Qm+Lt) diagrams. The sands of the LST mostly have high Qm/(Qm+Lt) ratios (well matured), and those of the HST have low Qm/(Qm+Lt) ratio (poorly matured). The sands of tsunami deposits, which were deposited in a barrier sand body and a drowned valley environment of Makinohara Upper Pleistocene, are plotted in different fields on the diagrams of Ma versus Qm/(Qm+Lt). Those deposited in the drowned valley contain more monocrystalline quartz; those deposited in the barrier sand body contain more lithic fragments. The drowned-valley tsunamiite is plotted in a similar field to the drowned valley deposits. The tsunamiite in the barrier sand body is plotted in a similar field to the barrier sands and beach-shoreface sands. Relationships of grain-size characteristics and Qm/(Qm+Lt) plot do not show any clear correlation.

The late Neogene series, the Sagara and the Kakegawa Groups, are distributed in. Shizuoka Prefecture, Central Japan. Although the stratigraphy and the biostratigraphy of these series have been studied by many workers as one of the standard Neogene type series on the Pacific coast of Japan, the stratigraphic boundary and relationships between the Sagara and the Kakegawa Groups may be still indistinct. The Sagara Group is divided into the Sugegaya Formation and the Oyori Formation in ascending order. The Sugegaya Formation is subdivided into the Tokigaya alternation of conglomerate and sandstone and the Sugegaya alternation. The Oyori Formation is composed with the Hirugaya alternation, the Oyori mudstone, the Takao conglomerate, the Sakaguchi conglomerate and the Kiriyama mudstone rich alternation. The Kakegawa Group is divided into the Katsuma Formation, the Hagima Formation and the Tanno Formation in ascending order. The Katsuma Formation is composed with the Katsuma conglomerate, the Kakigaya sandstone, the Katsuta mudstone rich alternation, the Araya sandstone and the Nakajima conglomerate. The Hagima Formation is subdivided into the Hagima sandstone rich alternation and the Arakawa mudstone rich alternation. The Tanno Formation is subdivided into the Kawakami sandstone rich alternation and the Isobe mudstone rich alternation. This study has revealed that the basal horizon of the Kakegawa Group is the base of the Nakajima conglomerate and the Katsuma conglomerate in Kiriyama-Katsuma area, the base of the Kakigaya sandstone in Hagima area and the base of the Hagima sandstone rich alternation in Niino area. The relationship between the Sagara and Kakegawa Groups is.thought to be unconformity in the northern area, because the basal horizon of the Kakegawa Group onlaps on the Sagara Group in the northern area and it downlaps in the southern area.

Geological study of the Miocene submarine volcano exposed at the Ogi Peninsula, Sado island, Japan, has revealed the emplacement of jumbled sheet flows and pillow lava flows on a flank of flat submarine volcano, and enabled reconstruction of the volcanic activities. The lava flows resemble those formed at the Mid-Ocean Ridges. Teaching contents about this ancient submarine volcano were provided. The contents of disaster science were also suggested from the study of Tsunami deposits at the eastern margin of Japan Sea and from that of the volcanic mudflow (lahar) and slump deposits underwater environments.
