This research deals with how naming influences choice of surname of married-couple. Article 750 in civil law stipulates that "people must select their surname from those of husband or wife as married-couple surname when they marry". This provision is gender neutral in itself, but 95% of women select their husband's name. Why Japanese women overwhelmingly select their husband's name? What kind of pressure or power works when they marry? This research examines those pressure or power using internet questionnaire and interview.
This research reveals that how strong family institution in Meiji era influences people's family conception even now. In addition, persistence to masculinity also works. After World War 2, surname for man has become symbol of their identity, so men have not changed their surname. This research also mentions about several suits that challenging article 750.
