本研究は，生成統語論の観点から，英語と日本語における数量詞句（以下，QP）の作用域を決定する統語構造上の要因のうち，①外項QPと内項QPの統語的認可方法の違い，および②QPの格の認可がQPの作用域をどのように決定するかを明らかにしようとするものである。本研究の代表研究者は，平成24-26年度および平成27-29年度基盤研究Cにおいて，③QPの内部構造，④QPの主題／焦点素性の有無が作用域を決定する要因であることを明らかにした。本研究は，③, ④の成果を踏まえ，QPの作用域の他の決定要因として①, ②の役割を考察し，QPの作用域を決定する統語的要因の全貌を解明しようとするものである。

英語・日本語において、数量表現を含む名詞句（以下、数量詞句）の構成のしかたには複数の可能性があり、それぞれに意味的な違いが感じられる。
(1) a. All the students came. b. The students all came.
(2) a. ３人の学生が来た。 b. 学生が３人来た。 c. 学生３人が来た。
本研究は、英語と日本語における数量詞句の統語構造と、意味・談話的特性および作用域特性との関係について、生成文法統語論の観点から分析を試みるものである。具体的には、(A) 数量詞句の統語構造と意味・談話的特性はどのように関係しているか、(B) 数量詞句の統語構造と意味・談話的特性は作用域特性とどのように関係しているか、および(C) 数量詞句は、文の統語構造内においてどのように統語的に認可されるか、の３つの問いを設定し、それぞれの要因の関連性を探っていく。

本研究は，生成文法理論の枠組みで，数量詞句の作用域など文の意味決定に参与する統語的・形態的要因や，否定極性表現等の言語形式の認可原則について明らかにすることを目標とするものである。
本研究の研究経過および成果は以下のようにまとめられる。
(i) 不可視的移動規則である「数量詞上昇規則」と日本語などに見られる可視的移動規則であるスクランブリングやフランス語の遊離数量詞移動を考察し、移動境界に関する共通点がわかった。
(ii) (i)より，数量詞の作用域決定は，日本語のスクランブリングおよびフランス語の遊離数量詞移動を支配する原理と同一の原理によって支配されることになる。
さらに，Fox (2000), Takahashi (2002)等の「数量詞上昇規則」と経済性に関する知見および，河村(2002)等の，スクランブリングと情報構造に関する提案を検討した結果，
(iv) 同一の経済性原理が，不可視的移動にも可視的移動にも関わる。

この研究は生成統語論の観点から英語と日本語の否定表現の統語的特徴と否定文の統語的構造、および否定と数量詞の作用域関係の比較とその原理的な説明を目指すものである。
当研究の研究期間においては、日本語の否定辞「ない」が形容詞であることに着目して日本語の否定文の統語構造に関する分析を行い、さらに主語・目的語数量詞句と否定辞の相対的作用域関係が当該要素同士のＣ統御関係によって説明されることを示した。また、この説明が「ている」構文などの場合にも有効であることを示し、さらには英語と日本語の間に見られる主語・目的語と否定辞の作用域関係の違いについて、否定辞の統語構造上の違いによって説明を試みた。
得られた研究成果は、Homma (1998) “Scope of Negation, Syntactic Movement, and Structure of Japanese Negative Sentences,” Tsukuba English Studies 17, pp.25-50として発表した。
