We investigate how fertility decline affects the benefit of a pay-as-you-go pension using a two-sector overlapping generations model. We show that whether fertility decline reduces pension benefits is determined by the capital intensity ranking between the two sectors. When the consumption-goods sector is capital-intensive, fertility decline decreases pension benefits. Contrastingly, when the investment-goods sector is capital-intensive, the size of the price elasticity determines whether fertility decline reduces pension benefits. When elasticity is sensitive, fertility declines increase pension benefits. We also present numerical simulations. Our results suggest that, although it remains theoretically possible that fertility decline increases pension benefits, such a paradoxical result is unlikely to occur.

This study is a theoretical examination of whether employee-controlled firms (ECFs) enter a free-entry oligopolistic market excessively or insufficiently, from the viewpoint of welfare maximization. The excess entry theorem is well known in oligopoly theory. According to this theorem, a greater number of profit-maximizing firms enter a free-entry oligopolistic market than is optimal for welfare maximization. We demonstrate the possibility that insufficient entry arises when ECFs compete in a free-entry market. In particular, we show that if both the demand and cost functions are convex, insufficient ECF entry necessarily occurs. Our results suggest that competition among firms seeking purposes other than profit might lead to insufficient entry because differences in competing firms’ objectives affect the intensity of market competition.

This paper examines the privatization neutrality theorem when a public firm pursues general objectives other than welfare maximization. This theorem states that when the government gives firms optimal subsidies, welfare is exactly the same before and after privatization. However, we present a seemingly paradoxical result. When a public firm incorrectly assumes that subsidies change the welfare size, privatization is necessarily welfare neutral, whereas when the public firm correctly recognizes that subsidies only bring about income redistribution, without affecting welfare, the situations in which neutrality holds are limited.

We investigate how banks’ degree of imperfect competition affects economic growth. This study explores an imperfect competition model in banking in an overlapping generations model with endogenous growth. We demonstrate the following results. First, an increase in the deposit interest rate increases the steady growth rate of the economy. Second, as competition among banks intensifies, the economic growth rate increases. Third, it is ambiguous as to whether a higher lending interest rate caused by an increase in productivity results in a higher economic growth rate. In our numerical exercises, we exemplify the possibility that an increase in the lending interest rate increases the growth rate.

This study examines the transfer problem between two countries when either the donor or the recipient has aspirations, based on parents' standards of living, in a one-sector overlapping generations model. Focusing on whether and how aspirations impact the welfare effect of a transfer, we demonstrate the following results. First, when the donor forms aspirations, as the degree of his/her aspirations to their parents increases, a transfer is more likely to cause donor enrichment. However, this does not affect the recipient's welfare at all. In contrast, when the recipient forms aspirations, whether the increase in the degree of these aspirations causes immiserization depends on whether the transfer raises the recipient's consumption. Second, we show that if the donor's or recipient's marginal utility increases with their respective aspirations, the transfer is more likely to cause recipient immiserization. However, whether donor enrichment occurs depends on the situation. These results imply that there are two types of effects that aspirations can have on the welfare of both countries: effects caused by the aspirations, and effects that occur through the capital market. Furthermore, we find that these two effects on welfare do not necessarily work in the same direction.

This article theoretically investigates how different ownership structures of patents affect ex ante and ex post incentives for innovation by applying a property rights approach. We explore a model in which two research laboratories invest in R&D to obtain an innovative patent, and after successfully obtaining the patent they determine an ownership structure for the patent. The two parties consider how the determined patent ownership would affect their noncontractible relation-specific investments for commercialisation. We demonstrate that joint ownership of a patent between two parties is optimal. More concretely, if a selfish (altruistic) relation-specific investment is more important than an altruistic (selfish) investment, a joint ownership with no (bilateral) veto is optimal to maximise the joint value. Moreover, when both parties do not commit themselves to joint ownership in advance, they have greater incentive to invest in R&D than committing, even if they understand that joint ownership is desirable ex post.

We examine how international transfers affect the welfare levels of a donor with a higher marginal propensity to save and a recipient with a lower marginal propensity to save when both countries adopt a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) pension system using a one-sector overlapping generations model. We demonstrate that in a dynamically efficient economy, except at the golden rule, when a per capita PAYG pension contribution of either a donor or a recipient increases marginally, the effect of the transfer on the donor’s welfare can be reduced, whereas whether the effect of the transfer on the recipient’s welfare is reduced is ambiguous. These results imply that the existence of a PAYG pension might hinder the effectiveness of the transfer on the donor’s welfare, and the adoption of a PAYG pension system is likely to cause a weak transfer paradox in which both a donor and a recipient immiserize. Our results also suggest that the introduction of a PAYG pension system, which is used as a domestic policy instrument for intergenerational income redistribution, reduces the donor’s incentive to make an international transfer to a recipient, which is a form of international income redistribution.

This paper revisits De Fraja and Delbono (1989), which is the seminal paper on mixed oligopoly, in order to pay more attention to Stackelberg competition. First, we show that, even in Cournot competition, if the number of private firms is sufficiently small, privatization necessarily reduces social welfare. Second, we demonstrate that when a public firm is a Stackelberg leader before and after privatization, privatization necessarily reduces welfare irrespective of the number of private firms. Moreover, we show that even when a public firm remains a follower, privatization reduces welfare if the number of private firms is relatively small.

We investigate the transfer problem between two countries in the steady state in a one-sector overlapping generations model and explain how transfers should be shared between the young and old generations of the donor country and allocated across the generations of the recipient country. Except at the golden rule of capital accumulation, the ratios of the burden and distribution of transfers between the young and old generations affect welfare. We obtain the following results. First, the sharing of the transfer burden in the donor country depends on the relative size of two effects, namely, a negative direct effect and a positive indirect effect. If the former exceeds the latter, it is preferable for the donor country to allocate all of the transfer burden to the old generation and vice versa. Second, from the viewpoint of welfare maximization, it is preferable for the recipient country to distribute all of the transfers to the young generation. In contrast to the existing literature, these results suggest that the setting whereby the young generation of the donor country defrays all transfer costs may not be justifiable from the viewpoint of donor welfare maximization.

This study investigates how intergenerational altruism affects the possibility of the transfer paradox occurring in a two-country, one-sector overlapping generations model. We derive the conditions under which the transfer paradox occurs in our model where a generation within each country has altruism toward the subsequent generation. Contrary to earlier results in the literature, we find that altruism does not enter the conditions under which the transfer paradox occurs in the steady state. Moreover, we show that although altruism affects the condition of the transfer paradox along the transition path, its effect on this condition vanishes as the economy converges to the steady state.

This paper examines the transfer problem between two countries when a donor exhibits altruistic utility toward a recipient in a one-sector overlapping generations model. We demonstrate that if the donor has a larger marginal propensity to save than the recipient, the donor's altruism never contributes to donor enrichment irrespective of the degree of the donor's altruism. Donor enrichment occurs only if the donor has a smaller marginal propensity to save and a sufficiently high level of altruism. These findings imply that the altruism of a donor toward a recipient does not necessarily explain the motivation to voluntarily provide a transfer.

We examine the effect of uncertainty on horizontal mergers, considering that firms must decide whether to merge before observing the realized cost of the merged firm. The existing literature clarifies that merging firms facing cost uncertainty decide to merge if expected efficiency gains or informational advantages are positive. We show that even in the absence of uncertain efficiency gains or losses in expected terms, as the variance of uncertainty grows, horizontal mergers generate larger expected profits than before the merger and improve consumer surplus and welfare in expected terms. Our findings suggest that increased uncertainty itself provides an incentive for firms to merge. (JEL: D43, L13, L22)

We analyse the cost and benefit of outsourcing with adverse selection in a duopoly by comparing outsourcing with in-house production in terms of the manufacturers expected profit. When two manufacturers faced with ex ante cost uncertainty compete in a differentiated duopoly, outsourcing brings about a benefit in terms of reduced competition, while it entails the cost of information rent. We show that the manufacturers always choose in-house production in Cournot and Bertrand competition, when outsourcing and in-house production follow the same ex ante cost distribution. When the manufacturers compete in Cournot fashion, the cost of information rent always exceeds the benefit of reduced competition under outsourcing. On the other hand, when they compete in Bertrand fashion, it is possible that even if the benefit of outsourcing exceeds the cost, both manufacturers cannot choose outsourcing.

This is a study to develop and solve numerical models based on Itoh's (2003, Ch. 1) "Parts Supply Problems" for better understanding the contract theory. In the first part of this paper, by following Itoh (2003) we investigate 2- and 3-agent type cases; in the succeeding part, by using numerical examples, we examine how likely the simplifying assumptions often used in theoretical analysis are to hold. Finally, we demonstrate that we can extend these basic models to ones with a much larger number of agent types easily by exploiting the merit of our programming–model approach.http://www.grips.ac.jp/list/jp/facultyinfo/hosoe_nobuhiro/

In this study, I theoretically examined how international economic transfer should be made between a donor and a recipient country using the trade theory and international economics based on the recent findings on behavioral economics. In particular, I considered the altruism, reciprocity, and habit formation of the people who live in a donor and/or recipient country as well as the cognitive bias on the effect of economic aids, and we investigated how we should make the international transfer and should increase the effectiveness of economic aid.
As a contribution of my study, we explored a model in which the citizens of donor and/or recipient countries have aspiration towards parents' lifestyle, and presented a result on how the degree of aspiration affects the effectiveness of international transfer.

This research theoretically examined how to improve the physical infrastructure and the market infrastructure, which play a key role in the sound development and growth of the globalized modern economy, focusing on the interactions between the public and private sectors.
This research focuses on the following three topics: (1) strategic analysis of competition among countries regarding export and financing of physical infrastructure, (2) dynamic analysis of institutional transition and interaction between the mode of competition and trade structure, and (3) knowledge capital-based economic growth through educational investment and R&D under an open economy. By constructing the theoretical models regarding these topics and analyzing, this research derived new theoretical insights and policy implications for infrastructure development to form a "quality market" that achieves the sound development and growth of the global economy.

We scrutinized the effects of international foreign aid on welfares of donor and recipient countries in various economic environments. Firstly, we investigated how the effects of foreign aid on both countries'welfares are affected by intergenerational interdependency such as altruism and donor's sharing of burden and/or the recipient’s distribution of aid transfer. Secondly, we examined how a pay-as-you-go pension system affects the effects of foreign aid on both countries' welfares. In particular, our research succeeded in showing that international interdependency considered can trigger the possibility of the transfer paradox by improving the terms-of-trade of a donor country and/or deteriorating the terms-of-trade of a recipient. In addition, we clarified that political lobbying promotes economic growth of developing countries, which suggests that the appropriate design of political institution is required to prevent developing countries from falling into a poverty trap.

    (1) We have examined the impact that a merger between a public firm and a private firm has on social welfare in a mixed oligopolistic market. We have simulated the comparison of social welfare before and after the merger between a public firm and a private firm to investigate whether the merger improves social welfare by specifying the functional forms of cost function.
    (2) We have investigated the neutrality theorem on whether welfare is exactly the same before and after merging. We have shown that when regulating authorities can implement the appropriate subsidy policies to regulated firms, the privatization neutrality theorem can be satisfied in a broader economic environment. (3) We have analyzed the international harmonization of regulations. We have clarified that even if a country cares about other countries, income transfer from a transferor inhibits capital accumulation and the social welfare of the transferor is less likely to improve.

International M & A and Asymmetric Information on Market Demand"というタイトルの論文にまとめ,『国際公共政策研究』(第11巻第1号)に投稿・掲載予定とした.
Mergers under the Generalized Hierarchical Stackelberg Model"というタイトルの論文として,Niigata University Working Paper No.46にまとめた.
Observation of Common Retail Cost under Exclusive Dealing"というタイトルの論文にまとめ,Seoul Journal of Economics, Vol.18(1)に発表した.
