    In recent years, propagation channel characteristics have been effectively used in several applications such as motion sensing and position detection. Considerable attention has been paid to channel-sounding methods that are easy to utilize using low-cost devices. This paper presents a device-free indoor location estimation method using the spatio-temporal features of radio propagation channels using a 2.4 GHz-band three-by-three multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channel sounder developed using commodity wireless local area network (WLAN). The measurement results demonstrated a reasonable performance of the proposed method with a small number of antennas.

    <p>Wireless body area network (WBAN) is a wireless sensor network inside, on or around the human body, and is expected to be utilized in medical and health-care applications. Dynamic behavior of radio propagation channel is important information for design and characterization of WBAN system. Various factors simultaneously influence the channel responses, such as position and orientation of antennas, electromagnetic interaction antenna and human body, and obstruction by human body itself. Therefore, it is rather difficult to analyze the propagation mechanism of dynamic WBAN channel. This paper reports the development of simultaneous measurement system of MIMO channel response and body posture of dynamic WBAN channel. Body posture information is utilized to synthesize numerical phantom for electromagnetic simulation via computer animation software. Comparison between measurement and predicted channel responses is possible by using the system, and some examples will be presented.</p>

    One of the ways to meet the growing demand for higher data rates is to exploit the large amount of spectral resources available in the mmWave frequency band. The unlicensed 60 GHz band with continuous bandwidths of more than 5 GHz is a very attractive candidate for use in small cells of the future heterogeneous cellular networks. High free space path loss and atmospheric attenuation in 60 GHz propagation channel necessitates the use of high gain directional antennas or antenna arrays. The channel characteristics including its directional properties in different environment is very important to be investigated for use of techniques like MIMO beamforming and array beamsteering. We develop a low cost 3-D mmWave channel sounding system with capability of measuring the power spectrum related to AoA and AoD of different paths. Measurement and directional analysis for a typical indoor laboratory environment is carried out.

    This paper presents a low-cost flexible channel sounder with the maximum bandwidth of 12.5MHz operating at various frequency bands within 400 - 4400 MHz developed by using GNU radio/USRP. This paper describes an improved work based on its previous channel sounding system and especially focuses on the techniques of timing synchronization and phase alignment which were hard to achieve in its previous work. Finally, The effect of improvement of previous work was demonstrated and validated by a DUT test.

    Elucidation of the space-time radio wave propagation characteristics is always an important fundamental task to develop new wireless transmission systems. For this purpose, we specifically developed a scalable full Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) channel sounder to measure the radio channel at 11 GHz with bandwidth of 400 MHz which is a challenging frequency for future high bit-rate mobile communications. The measurement campaign in various indoor environment was conducted at Tokyo Institute of Technology. Individual paths are extracted from the measurement with the Space Alternating Generalized Expectation Maximization (SAGE) algorithm. For cluster based analysis, we used K-means algorithm for automatic clustering of the detected paths and the statistical characteristics of cross-, co-polarization ratio, delay spread and direction spread were investigated based on clustering result.

The heights of the BS antenna installed at the balcony of the apartment and MS antenna on the top of the measurement vehicle were 9 m and 3 m, respectively. The snapshots were taken at constant time interval while MS was moving around the area with radius of 200 m at the velocity slower than 10 km/h. A wideband 24 × 24 MIMO channel sounder having 400 MHz signal bandwidth and dual-polarized 12-element uniform circular antenna arrays were used. The polarimetric beamforming and SAGE algorithm were used for data analysis. This paper presents the path loss characteristics and the polarization properties for LoS and NLoS around corner areas, respectively, and RMS delay spread. Then, from the detail analysis for the specific area with radius of 60 m that was performed with the azimuth delay power spectrum and the estimated multipath parameters in terms of the MS position, a dominant propagation mechanism was discussed.

    The high frequency spectrum offers wide bandwidths for future broadband cellular networks. This report presents the channel measurements for 11 GHz outdoor urban cellular propagation in Ishigaki City. The measurements at various urban cellular environments classifying them into macrocell, microcell and street-cell were conducted. A wideband 24×24 MIMO channel sounder with bandwidth of 400 MHz and dual-polarized 12-element uniform circular arrays were used. This report characterizes the path losses for LoS and NLoS conditions in various cellular environments, and large shadowing loss of approximately 20 dB was observed in case of NLoS condition. In addition, from the outage calculation, we could see that the cell coverage is limited less than 100 m for SNR of 30 dB. Then, temporal and spatial power distribution will be discussed using power delay profile (PDP) and azimuth delay power spectra (ADPS). The results showed that the RMS delay spreads were relatively small with the mean value of less than 15 ns regardless of environment, and was linearly dependent upon PL in dB.

    Antenna de-embedding is to extract antennas from both ends of a MIMO system and to study the propagation channel only. Antenna-Channel Recombination is to recombine the de-embedded channel with other antennas at both ends. Through antenna de-embedding and antenna-channel recombination, the performances of different antennas in certain propagation environment can be evaluated. A MIMO channel can be described in either plane wave domain or spherical wave domain. Plane wave channel model is difficult for antenna-channel separation, since diffuse scattering requires infinite resolution of plane waves but practically only best fitted discrete paths are feasible. Alternatively, spherical wave channel model is possible for antenna-channel separation, because physically any radiated field can be expanded into a weighted sum of spherical harmonics with finite number of modes, including the field corresponding to diffuse scattering. This paper will study the feasibility of antenna de-embedding and antenna-channel recombination in spherical wave domain. Since spherical wave channel model is sensitive to array configurations and the number of modes, the criteria of appropriate array configurations and appropriate number of modes for antenna de-embedding and antenna-channel recombination will be discussed accordingly.

    To collect vital data continuously using a wireless sensor network, a highly reliable wireless transmission is needed. Some diversity techniques such as RAKE diversity which combines the delayed multipath signals coherently, and antenna diversity which combines the independently received signals at different antennas, can be used in the coordinator to improve the performance. However, the performance gain depends on the radio propagation environment, thus they are not always effective. In this study, assuming a UWB BAN (ultra wideband body area network) system, the channel responses between the antennas of the coordinator attached on a waist belt and the the sensor nodes at various postions were measured. Then, the performance gains of RAKE reception and antenna diversity were compared by evaluating the outage probability. Furthermore, the dependency of the subject location in the room on the diversity gain was clarified.

    This research focuses on WBAN (Wireless Body Area Network), for medical and helathcare use. The WBAN has two problems. (i) There are a few antennas which is suitable for 2.4GHz band which is expected to be used mainly in future. (ii) High reliability of the communication is required in order to apply the medical field WBAN, however the communication condition is influenced by the human motion. In this study, an antenna, which is for WBAN measurement at 2.4 GHz band, was fabricated and designed and the antenna orientation for good communication status during human motion was considered. The antenna is fabricated and measured return loss, and the resonance frequency. In this research, time variation of received level of point-to-point during standing and walking in which transmitter is on navel and receivers are on breast, head, right arm, right wrist, and right ankle is measured in an indoor environment by two subjects. Two-way analysis of variance for the average of the values of the received level whose factors are the orientation of transmit and receive antennas was subjected for each position of the receive antenna and subject. As a result, it is quantitatively shown that the orientation of of the transmit and the receive antenna causes the change of received level. It is also shown that changing antenna orientation commonly improves received level in the case of one-on-one communication, but the best antenna orientation in the case of multiple access communication is depends on subjects during standing and walking. The results of this research would be useful to design highly reliabile WBAN communication systems.

    This report presents a novel wideband MIMO channel sounder with a fully parallel transceiver architecture that employs a layered scheme of frequency and space-time division multiplexing. It offers inherent scalability of the number of antennas by a combination of multiple transceiver units and flexibility for both directional MIMO channel and multi-link MIMO channel measurements with up to 24 × 24 MIMO configuration.     Many modulation schemes exhibit a peak along the cross-section of the spectral correlation density (SCD) at the carrier frequency, where the cyclic frequency of that peak represents the symbol rate of the received signal. In this paper, a symbol rate estimation technique for various modulated signals is proposed. Window functions are used to improve discrete Fourier transform (DFT) results, and a simple filter is used to amplify peaks across the cyclic frequency domain. The proposed technique can be used together with feature extraction to perform AMC. Simulation results show that the proposed technique can estimate the symbol rate and classify modulations with good performance at SNRs of 4dB and above.

In this report, 8×8 MIMO channel sounder based on software defined radio architecture which is the extended version of already reported 4×4 system was presented. It was developed for the fundamental evaluation of future mobile communication systems operating at 11 GHz in which the multi-link MIMO technology will be adopted. Antenna arrays and multiplexing technique for the channel sounding based on the 8×8 system is also reported including fundamental system validations. As a results, the fundamental performance of the implemented sounder was assessed, hence the validity of proposed channel sounding technique was verified.

    Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is used in many military and civilian applications such as surveillance, spectrum monitoring, security, emitter identification, cognitive radio etc. Typically the receivers for the AMC is blind in nature i.e there is no pilot channel or known training sequence between the transmitters and receivers. This requires some non-data aided (NDA) signal processing in the receiver side. The detection algorithm becomes more complex in an environment where emitters use both analog and digital modulation schemes. AMC unit must estimate the carrier frequency, bandwidth, symbol rate etc. for accurate detection of the modulation types. In this demonstration, a feature based AMC algorithm will be introduced in the software defined radio (SDR) platform by using universal software peripheral radio (USRP), GNU radio and some open-source software.

    Emergency rescue operations require quick and efficient setup of collapsed telecommunication infrastructure in the disaster area. In a scenario where international rescue teams come for help, an automatic network collaboration system is necessary to avoid the interferences. This work developed a prototype that can detect the presence of active emergency radios with some physical parameters and maintain a public database. The prototype can demonstrate some basic functions of the proposed system. Energy detector based cooperative spectrum sensing as well as a supervised learning based automatic modulation recognition system have been implemented by using USRP and GNU Radio.

    There is an approach that extracts or de-embeds the transmitting and receiving antennas from the multipath radio channels, as they are parts of communication devices of the channel in particular in the state-of-art MIMO technology. This approach is called double-directional channel, since it constructs a radio propagation model independent of antennas. This paper presents to construct double-directional channel with spherical harmonics to try to express antennas and propagation properties for the preparation of detailed data analysis, the convergence property of the antenna pattern reconstruction by truncated numbers of the spherical harmonics.

    Emergency communication systems are set to perform efficient rescue operations after disasters. Wireless communications is the only choice for these networks. After a natural disaster like earthquake in a metropolitan area, rescue operations must be quick and collaborative. Rescue teams setup their own emergency networks urgently. Checking the availability of the wireless channels in the disaster area is a time consuming and inconvenient solution. A spectrum sensing network that can detect the location and frequency of active emergency radio emitters in the disaster area can be helpful to avoid the interference among the rescue teams. In this paper, we propose a framework of multi-channel sensing architecture based on polyphase DFT filter bank followed by energy detector with minimum complexity. The sensing performance is evaluated by numerical simulation as well as theoretical analysis comparing with the conventional periodogram spectral estimator and time domain sequential sensing.

    This paper presents dynamic channel measurement results for wireless body area network (BAN) using male specimens' office environment and the statistical characteristics of path gain when a human body is in motion. To capture the dynamic behavior of the channel, a vector network analyzer was used. Measurements were done at three frequencies, i.e. 444.5MHz, 611MHz and 953MHz. The measurements were repeated for three postures, i.e. standing still, walking on the spot, repeatedly standing up and sitting down, at 10Rx antenna positions. Considering that the body surface channel is quasi-static, it can be expressed by statistical distributions of the path gain. In this paper, the idea and configuration of the measurement system is mainly discussed.

    Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) Adaptive Array Antenna is an effective technique to achieve high-speed mobile communication system. MMSE suppresses the interference and delayed waves by steering null direction to them, and detects the desired signal by forming the main-lobe to the desired wave. There are some well-known optimization techniques to obtain the optimum weights, RLS (Recursive Least Squares) algorithm is known as fast convergence property than LMS (Least Mean Square) algorithm. However, the complexity increases in proportion to the square of the number of array elements. A systolic array processor computes the QRD-RLS algorithm based on Givens rotation using of high order of parallelism and pipeline architecture, and it can reduce the processing time needed by RLS algorithm. This report presents FPGA implementation of LMS, RLS, QRD-RLS algorithm and evaluates gate usages, convergence characteristics at actual processing time and bit dependency with fixed-point computation.

    MMSE (Minimum Mean Square Error) Adaptive Array Antenna extracts the desired signal from received signals for decreasing the influence of delay waves and interference waves. Three adaptive algorithms can be regarded as representative ones for MMSE adaptive array, and the RLS (recursive Least Squares) algorithm is the one known for fast convergence but a large computational cost including matrix operations. The computational time must be shortened by parallel processing if RLS is implemented on FPGA, but the fixed-point operation on FPGA may cause a problem of since RLS generally requires floating-point operation. The authors have already reported that the fixed-point operation can achieve the accuracy as well as the floating-point operation provided that the number of element is limited to four. In this report, we try to actually mount the RLS algorithm on FPGA with fixed-point operation and see its accuracy. Sinusoidal wave are given incident waves. For the syncronization problem, we adpot the sliding correlation method between the received and the reference signals. A mathced filter used to calcurate the correlation for sinusoidal wave is mounted on FPGA, and is evaluated if it really works as a syncronizer.

    We developed evaluation system that can control transmit antenna pattern. This system solves the problem of multi path fading and improves the frequency usability by realization of a SDMA (Space Division Multiple Access) technique. This system consists of some FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array) and can perform signal processing required for each array antenna element in parallel. This system provides the digital up-conversion (DUC) after QPSK mapping of serial bit stream and the multiplication with complex weights. This paper reports implementation of the digital part of an adaptive array antenna transmitter.

    This study aims at realizing the mobile communication system utilizing narrow beam antennas at the frequency above 10GHz. Specifically, the instruments measuring the radio propagation characteristics, known as a channel sounder, with high directional resolution are built for the experiments. In parallel, simulation technique utilizing the detailed geometrical data for the propagation prediction is implemented. These results were used to construct the highly directional radio channel models for narrow beam antennas.

    Body area network (BAN) has been considered for specific applications such as medicine, healthcare, firefighter, and military, as well as entertainment applications. This project aimed at solving the fundamental problems of analysis and modeling of dynamic behavior of BAN channel due to the human body motion, by improving the channel sounding systems, simulation approach, and practical modeling, as well as at identifying the highly reliable transmission schemes under the dynamic channels. Major outcomes of the project are summarized into the following four items: (1) Establishment of dynamic multipoint channel sounders, (2) establishment of dynamic BAN channel simulators, (3) antenna de-embedding from BAN channel, and (4) highly reliable transmission schemes for multisensor BAN.
