    Accumulation and concentration of debris in deep hole electrical discharge machining (EDM) significantly hinder its machining efficiency and accuracy. It is believed that the movement of bubbles associated with the discharge gap flow field play a pivotal role in debris removal and influence the discharge conditions. Ultrasonic vibration (USV) of the electrode is thought to be an effective method for improving EDM-generated bubbles and debris exclusion. In this study, we first elucidated the behavior of bubbles during EDM of holes with varying aspect ratios. Subsequently, USV was introduced to EDM. The behavior of dielectric fluid flow under the influence of ultrasonic vibration was analyzed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), which revealed time-varying changes in discharge gap flow pressure and velocity. The velocity of the dielectric flow field near the electrode’s side face was found to reach a maximum of approximately 15.2 m/s, greatly facilitating debris removal. High-speed camera observations revealed that bubbles were dispersed within the side gap, with most of them adhering to the electrode’s wall. Furthermore, the bubbles exhibited a tendency to continuously break up and coalesce near the hole’s outlet before escaping in the USV-assisted EDM. These observed characteristics of bubble behavior under the influence of USV are expected to significantly enhance debris removal and promote efficient dielectric exchange.

    This paper describes surface modification and surface deposition using a high-peak current discharge in an air gap and describes the relation between capacitance, which determines the peak current, and the deposition rate. The process is controlled manually using a rotating tool. The discharge circuit is a resistor-capacitor (RC) circuit, and switching is executed by means of a thyristor. The deposition of nickel onto a steel surface was performed using a nickel-based alloy for the electrode. The electrode was controlled with reciprocating rotation. The influence of the capacitance of the capacitor and the diameter of the electrode on the deposition rate was investigated. Using the proposed method, excellent surface deposition was achieved.

    In this paper, we propose the simultaneous machining of a polygonal microelectrode and microholes using a tandem electrical discharge machining (EDM) mechanism. Two types of power sources for forming the polygonal pillar electrode and hole machining were installed on the same machine. A mask plate with the target shape is used to form the electrode. Planar motion was applied to the mask plate, and a polygonal micropillar electrode was produced by reducing operation. In this process, the low wear condition of the mask plate and the high wear condition of the electrode were chosen. Zinc alloy, which is easy to form by EDM, was used for the electrode material. After the electrode was formed, polygonal microholes were drilled into a tungsten plate using this electrode. Microhole machining with a zinc alloy electrode resulted in a removal rate that was higher than that with a copper electrode of the same shape. To perform simultaneous machining of a microelectrode and microholes, a tandem structure mechanism was constructed. Continuous polygonal microhole machining was attained by applying the tandem EDM mechanism under the appropriate conditions. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

    We have studied the production process for a polygonal pillar electrode with a copper mask plate and electrical discharge machining of the tungsten material using this electrode. Planetary motion was applied to the mask plate in which a polygonal hole was machined in advance. The polygonal micropillar electrode was produced by this reduced scale process. Zinc alloy, which is easy to form by electrical discharge machining, was used for the electrode material. In this process, the machining conditions under which the wear of the mask plate was small and the forming rate of the electrode was high were chosen. In the next stage, polygonal microholes were drilled into the tungsten material using this electrode. In hole machining with a zinc alloy electrode, the removal rate became higher than that with a same-shape copper electrode. In order to perform simultaneous machining of a microelectrode and microholes, a tandem structure mechanism was developed. Continuous polygonal microhole machining was attained by applying the tandem mechanism.

    Rod-type electrodes 100-500μm in diameter are widely used in micro-electrical discharge machining (EDM) methods. However, handling these small rod electrodes is difficult. We propose a"peeling tool" method to overcome such tool handling difficulties. The peeling tool consists of a core and cladding. This method is based on a double-layer construction of a micro-rod or micro-wire coated with a Low-Melting-Temperature (LMT) alloy. With the proposed peeling technique, the micro-rod of the peeling tool is peeled off to a desired diameter to obtain a micro-hole drilling tool. We studied the machining process to remove LMT alloy of the peeling tool by EDM, and thus makes the drilling of micro-holes easier. This study was performed to investigate the machining characteristics of the peeling tool under ideal conditions. In particular, we confirmed the influences of workpiece material, workpiece thickness, and core diameter.

    Mini Ken or Mini Research, which is a kind of seminar of research practice, was introduced and has beencarried out in Fukushima National College of Technology. The purpose of Mini Ken is to give second gradestudents academic study experience such as research, examination, organization, report and presentation, in the earlystage of their learning. The project of Mini Ken started in 2006 after one year planning by a working group.Almost all faculty members lead mini ken. Five students are allocated to each Mini Ken by their first to fifthpreference, according to their school record of first year. Students have an opportunity of research with students andteachers in other departments. Depending on their individual theme, some activities of Mini Ken are carried out notonly in school hour but also in weekends or summer vacation. Mini Ken gives students one credit afterpresentation in the style of poster session in September. This paper reports the history of Mini Ken project andshows its effectiveness of education.

    "The manufacturing useful for citizens" has been operated in department of mechanical engineering of Fukushima National College of Technology since 2003. To improve the manufacturing ability of students and to raise the perfection of the products, the engineers who have a high skill were employed. Then, they supported creative manufacturing practice with teachers and technical officers. As the results, the students can introduce the four products that they made in the public symposium. In this paper, we report about the support of creative manufacturing practice by engineers.

    In this study, we investigate the effect of discharge current on the occurrence of burst AE wave caused by microsecond discharge. Electrical discharge duration was changed from about 1µs to 8µs by using condenser circuit. Effect of current behavior was estimated by comparing with experimental signal and simulation one. AE wave was detected by optical fiber vibration sensor. The optical fiber vibration sensor is located on an aluminum work-piece (cathode) plate. Simulation was carried out with MSC. Marc. As the results, it was found that AE wave was occurred by a force depending on electrical current behavior. The force direction was machining direction. The force has been occurred during microsecond discharge.

    In electrical discharge machining (EDM), it is well known that removal rate and surface roughness are improved with ultrasonic vibrated tool. However, it is difficult in an actual machining to keep resonant conditions with a tool electrode of various sizes and materials. In this study, a new supporting method of an ultrasonic transducer and the vibration transmission method of a tool electrode are examined. EDM and abrasive machining were performed with ultrasonic vibrated tool. In the machining of steel plate, the machining speed was improved by five times compared with conventional finish EDM. The tool electrode excited by ultrasonic vibration is also applied to diamond abrasive grinding process for removing carbon layer on insulating ceramics after EDM with an assisting electrode. Mirror surface of silicon nitride ceramics can be achieved through the grinding process.

    In this research, micro-pin fabrication by scanning electrical discharge machining was carried out according to two machining processes. As the first process, the shape of a groove is fabricated by scanning electrical discharge machining under the conditions of minus of electrode polarity. As the second process, electrode polarity is made to change and a micro-pin is fabricated for this machining groove as a base level.     Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) has been used in micro-fabrication because of its low reaction force. We proposed a new micro-pin forming method in which a rotating electrode scans towards a forming plate. As the processing area in this method is large, a higher removal rate is achieved compared to the WEDG method. And forming of the micro-pin of 8μm diameter and 250μm length is done easily by this method. The rotational speed of the micro-pin reached critical in the process of high aspect ratio of the micro-pin forming. We consider the micro-pin rotation effects on miniaturization limits. In this study, we investigate micro-pin forming method considering the natural vibration frequency of the electrode.

    In recent years, human resources that are requested by the industries and the society, is a student with an engineering design skill and practical creative skill. In particular, companies are demanding and requesting a lot to students that to learn in college student is difficult. Companies request an engineer that can be used to create new products and technical capabilities. Therefore, in our university, we practice collaborative project with the company. This project is an educational program that students themselves to do. Collaborative project with the company is able to build a relationship of Win-Win. We have to educate the ability to solve problems and explore issues through the creativity. In this paper, we report on the practices of engineering design education in University-Industry cooperation.

    We have studied the process of production of square pillar electrode with a copper mask plate and electrical discharge machining of the tungsten material by this electrode. Planetary motion was applied to the mask plate in which a square hole was machined in advance. The square micro pillar electrode was produced through this process. In the next stage, square holes were drilled to the tungsten material by using this electrode. In order to perform simultaneous machining of a micro electrode and micro holes, a tandem structure mechanism was developed. This paper described the result of machining process with this new mechanism.

    This paper describes surface modification and surface deposition using a high peak current discharge in an air gap. The process of this method is controlled manually using a rotating tool. The discharge circuit is an RC circuit, and switching is executed by means of a thyristor. The deposition of nickel onto a steel surface was carried out using a nickel-based alloy for the electrode. The influence that the capacitance of the capacitor and the diameter of the electrode had on deposition was investigated. In addition, surface deposition using a mask of an arbitrary shape was performed, and partial surface deposition was achieved.

    In this study, a multi-functional wire feeding device that uses a feeding wire tool was produced. This allows a sample for SEM observation to be shaped by EDM under a small reaction force and finished on the same machine, by abrasive machining. In the machine set up, the wire guide is only used during abrasive machining, and withdrawn for wire EDM. Repetitive slicing leads to three-dimensional observations of a specimen's material composition distribution by EDS. In this paper, feasibility of materials distribution observation using SEM through a repetitive slicing process is discussed.

Repetitive surfacing leads to 3 dimensional observation of materials distribution of a specimen. In this paper, we applied abrasive machining to cast iron and analyzed its surface by energy dispersion X-ray spectrometry (EDS).
