This article considers changes in the perception and avoidance behavior of food risks over time. In Japan, consumers' concerns about the risks of radiation exposure via food consumption rose rapidly after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in 2011. We conducted choice experiment surveys three months, seven months, and eleven months after the Fukushima accident and simulated the conditional means of willingness to pay (WTP) for avoiding radiation exposure via food consumption in each survey period. The results show that although the characteristics of changes in averting behaviors vary depending on the type of food, the heterogeneity in WTP values for avoiding food risk tends to reduce (broaden) when their magnitude decreases (increases).

This study investigates potential demand for infrastructure investment for alternative fuel vehicles by applying stated preference methods to a Japanese sample. The potential demand is estimated on the basis of how much people are willing to pay for alternative fuel vehicles under various refueling scenarios. Using the estimated parameters, the economic efficiency of establishing battery-exchange stations for electric vehicles is examined. The results indicate that infrastructural development of battery-exchange stations can be efficient when electric vehicle sales exceed 5.63% of all new vehicle sales. Further, we find a complementary relationship between the cruising ranges of alternative fuel vehicles and the infrastructure established. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study applies a threshold model proposed by Granovetter (1978) to analyze the diffusion process of donating behavior for renewable energy. We first use a stated preference survey to estimate the determinants of a decision to support the donation scheme under various predicted participation rates. Using the estimated coefficients, we simulate how herd behavior spreads and the participation rate reaches the equilibrium. The participation rate at the equilibrium is estimated as 37.88% when the suggested donation is 500 yen, while it is 17.76% when the suggested amount is 1000 yen. The influence of environmentalism and altruism is also examined, and we find that these motivations increase the participation rate by 31.51% on average. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We conduct an experimental survey to analyze how rules for collective decision-making influence individual preferences regarding nature restoration plans. Our study compares two decision-making rules-a consensus rule and a majority rule-wherein participants decide on a plan regarding nature restoration in the Kushiro Wetland, Japan. Our main finding is that the difference between the individual preferences and collective decision-making is less significant under the consensus rule than the majority rule. Furthermore, there is a larger disparity with regard to the marginal willingness to pay between collective and individual decisions when participants are unsatisfied with the results of collective choice. It is important for the conservation polity to implement the value of biodiversity. However, non-market valuation of biodiversity might be difficult due to the heterogeneity of individual preferences. This research focuses on the deliberative valuation which estimates the value of the environmental resources using the dialogue and discussion on the valuation targets. We analyzed the process of the value formation for the biodiversity conservation in discussion to others and considered the application of our proposed valuation methods to the environmental policy.

The water quality trading auction is a program which tries to minimize social abatement costs of water pollutants by trading water quality credits between non-point sources and point sources. In the study, I modeled a situation in which there are heterogeneous delivery coefficients by applying an asymmetric auction model. I also addressed an empirical study using laboratory experiments on the water quality trading auctions in which a single or multiple water quality credits are traded. Although the analysis of experimental data is ongoing, I have built a fundamental framework of experimental study on the research questions.
