    The virtual image presented with Augmented Reality (AR) device is superimposed on the real world, and we can perceive it as if actually existing there. However, it is still unclear whether we could perceive a virtual image with the setting values for depth (distance and size). In this study, we examined the basic characteristics of depth perception for the AR images by the adjustment method (compared between an AR object and a real object) and the constant method (compared between an AR object and reference of distance). The results of experiments showed the overestimation of depth for a virtual image. In addition, the monocular observation would induce much overestimation than the binocular observation, while the sensitivity of depth improved with occlusion for another side of the eye where the virtual image was not presented. These results would help more appropriate presentation of the virtual image in the AR devices.

    In this study, we report a novel visual illusion for rotational motion, in which the central rotation axis of a partially invisible (apparent) square is perceived as exhibiting oscillatory rotation. To investigate the cause of this illusion, we measured the central position of a static apparent shape using an adjustment method (Experiment 1) and manipulated the speed of the rotating apparent square to test whether the illusion could be cancelled out by counteracting rotation using a constant method (Experiment 2). The results revealed that the perceived central position of a static apparent shape was shifted toward the outside. The shifted position depended on the orientation of the stimulus, and its position was arranged as if it was moving in a circular trajectory. In addition, the cancellation technique using counteracting rotation was successful, and cancellation of faster rotation required a greater radius of counteracting rotation. These results indicated that the illusion is induced by an interaction between illusory shifts of the central position of the static shape and the summation of motion vectors or motion momentum (e.g., centrifugal force) derived from shape representation by perceptual completion.

    This study investigated the effect of a secondary task when a takeover request (TOR) is received from an automated driving car, with a focus on nature of the secondary task (active or passive). Participants were asked to engage in one type of secondary task during automated driving, and we measured 1) forward gaze and 2) latency after the TOR to switch from automated to manual operation. Playing a game with a smartphone (active task) decreased driving-related performance in terms of shorter forward-gaze duration and longer delays in switching from TOR. In contrast, the performance in the other tasks (passively watching a video and conversing with another person) was little different from that in a condition with no secondary task. Compared to the tasks, not an active but a passive task would contribute to maintain the readiness for TOR.

  • Perceptual shrinkage of a one-way motion path with high-speed motion Reviewed

    Back-and-forth motion induces perceptual shrinkage of the motion path, but such shrinkage is hardly perceived for one-way motion. If the shrinkage is caused by temporal averaging of stimulus position around the endpoints, it should also be induced for one-way motion at higher motion speeds. In psychophysical experiments with a high-speed projector, we tested this conjecture for a one-way motion stimulus at various speeds (4-100 deg/s) along a straight path. Results showed that perceptual shrinkage of the motion path was robustly observed in higher-speed motion (faster than 66.7 deg/s). In addition, the amount of the forwards shift at the onset position was larger than that of the backwards shift at the offset position. These results demonstrate that high-speed motion can induce shrinkage, even for a one-way motion path. This can be explained by the view that perceptual position is represented by the integration of the temporal average of instantaneous position and the motion representation.

    In visual psychophysics, a CRT monitor has been widely used to present visual stimuli, while its temporal resolution was limited by its frame length of about 5 ms (i.e., refresh rate of 200 Hz). Recently, however, a high speed DLP projector was introduced to the market, which realizes much shorter frame length (〜 0.2 ms) for binary images. For such projectors, moreover, the duty ratio of the optical images can be manipulated, which makes it possible to investigate the mechanism of human temporal visual processing which cannot be accessed with the conventional visual devices. In this paper, we explain some temporal properties of the projector essential to the psychophysical experiments and show an example of experimental setup made in combination of the projector with a programming library for psychophysical experiments.

    The critical fusion frequency (CFF) is a threshold that represents the temporal limits of the human visual system. If two flickering stimuli with equal subjective luminances are presented simultaneously at different locations, the CFF is the temporal frequency above which they cannot be distinguished. However, when the stimuli are presented sequentially at the same position, a transient twinkle can be perceived around the moment of the changeover. To investigate the mechanism underlying this transient twinkle perception (TTP), we independently manipulated the luminance contrast and temporal frequency of the flicker, as well as the interstimulus interval (ISI). We found that TTP was greater as the luminance step was larger, was stably perceived for flicker frequencies up to 200 Hz, and was robust for all ISIs if flicker frequencies were below 250 Hz. For 250- and 300-Hz flickers, TTP was attenuated in conditions in which one-frame and two-frame ISIs were inserted. These results can be explained by a simple filtering model: TTP occurs if the temporal change in the weighted moving average of stimulus luminance exceeds a certain threshold. TTP gives additional evidence that the human visual system can detect the transient change of flicker stimuli at much higher temporal frequencies than the CFF, by an averaging mechanism of luminance.

    The existence of top-down modulation from global- to local-motion mechanisms is examined by using motion-aftereffect (MAE) with four-patch pseudo-gabor stimuli containing either global (translation and rotation) or local (single patch) motion. MAE durations were measured with a stationary gabor test patch whose position coincided with one of the adaptation patches. The duration was almost equal between the three conditions. These results indicate that there is little top-down interaction from global- to local-motion mechanisms, and suggest that the flow of motion information is mainly bottom-up as long as MAE strength is concerned.

    We demonstrated that good continuity, or amodal collinear connectivity, generates an integrated object from component arcs and this integration brings motion binding (Lorenceau & Shiffrar, 1992). Therefore, the existence of corners is not a required factor for motion binding. We presented to observers either a circle or a four-pointed star composed of four arcs with occluders. Motion binding was perceived for both configurations. However, the bound shape appeared rigid with stars, but appeared elastic with circles. This difference probably arises from less tolerance for fluctuation in integration based on continuity than that in integration based on corners.

    Finger pointing is used to cue an interesting object or position. In this study, we evaluated the area size designated by finger pointing using a visual search task. In general, a target is detected faster when it was cued by any method, including finger pointing. Experiment 1 revealed that observers conduct a visual search faster when the target position is specified by pointing, than in a no-cue condition. The improvement using pointing was comparable to that by conventional cueing with a line segment. In Experiment 2 the stimulus display was physically delimited by line frames to reduce the number of stimulus items to undergo a visual search. The data were compared to those from Experiment 1 to obtain the actual limitation realized by pointing. This analysis suggested that the observers' attention was limited to within 10 to 15 degrees radius by the effect of pointing..

    To investigate how quickly we can perceive being watched by other people, we evaluated the effect of duration on the quantitative judgment of gaze direction and the perception of "being looked at". The stimuli were models of heads generated by a computer, and the rotation angle and gaze direction of each head was varied independently. The participants were asked to judge whether the stimulus was looking at them (being-looked-at judgment), and to judge where the stimulus was looking (quantitative gaze direction judgment). The results revealed that neither the direction that gives the best perception of being-looked-at, nor the perceptually straight direction of the participants were affected by the duration (100ms, 1000ms, or an unlimited duration). These results indicate that the judgment of whether or not a looker's gaze is directed towards one completes at an early level in the gaze perception process and within 100ms.

    We examined whether motion binding (Lorenceau & Shiffrar, 1992) could be induced by local motion information that is independent of form information. The stimulus was a square frame, which is known to induce a strong perception of motion binding. The square was composed of bars having a sinusoidal spatial luminance modulation, either static or dynamic along their length. The results showed that dynamic modulation facilitates motion binding, while static modulation inhibits the binding. These results indicate that the local motion information contributes to the binding independently from that of form information.
