The purpose of this study was to clarify the functions of Chinese medicine in East Asia from the 7th to 12th centuries, and in what ways it connected various regions, including Japan.The study results were as follows:
(1) Chinese medicine functioned to alleviate problems and cultural friction arising in diplomacy between East Asian nations.(2) Chinese medicine was involved in a wide range of areas, including in the daily lives, rituals, domestic rule, and foreign missions of monarchies in various regions. These matters required East Asian medicinal materials.
We conclude that our analysis has provided a realistic picture of East Asian exchanges, one that differs from those seen in diplomatic, economic, and religious exchanges.
