    A method is proposed for obtaining the spectrum for noise that causes the phase decoherence of a qubit directly from experimentally available data. The method is based on a simple relationship between the spectrum and the coherence time of the qubit in the presence of a pi pulse sequence. The relationship is found to hold for every system of a qubit interacting with the classical-noise, bosonic, and spin baths.

    Using standard nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique and a well-fabricated sample, we have succeeded in directly observing local magnetic field generated by a micromagnet Ni(45)Fe(55) (with thickness of 400 nm), which was sputtered on an Al layer of 20 nm thickness. Improved sensitivity of our NMR technique enabled us to clearly observe Al-NMR signals, which are confirmed to come from Al nuclei in the 20 nm layers. From the analysis of the Al-NMR spectra, the local magnetic field was found to be +0.17 +/- 0.02 (-0.20 +/- 0.01) T, the sign of which is consistent with the geometry that the external magnetic field was applied perpendicular (parallel) to the Al layer. The present study gives a potential key element toward realizing higher resolution in magnetic resonance imaging. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

    We report on the 29Si nuclear spin decoherence time at room temperature for a pure (99.99999%, 7N) and carrier-less (p-type, doping level of $10^{15}$ cm-3) silicon in which 29Si nuclei are naturally abundant (4.7%). Despite the experimental difficulties coming from the extremely long spin-lattice relaxation time $T_{1}$ (of the order of $10^{4}$ s), we have successfully observed a series of spin-echoes of which the time dependence is characterized by the decoherence time $T_{2}$. We found that the decoherence process deviates from a single Gaussian or Lorentzian function but is well-reproduced by a bi-exponential function with the shorter ${T_{2 } }^{\text{S } }=15{\pm} 5$ ms and the longer ${T_{2 } }^{\text{L } }=200{\pm} 20$ ms.

    Sodium magnetic resonance imaging can non-invasively assess sodium distribution, specifically sodium concentration in the countercurrent multiplication system in the kidney, which forms a sodium concentration gradient from the cortex to the medulla, enabling efficient water reabsorption. This study aimed to investigate whether sodium magnetic resonance imaging can detect changes in sodium concentrations under normal conditions in mice and in disease models such as a mouse model with diabetes mellitus. Methods: We performed sodium and proton nuclear magnetic resonance imaging using a 9.4-T vertical standard-bore super-conducting magnet. Results: A condition of deep anesthesia, with widened breath intervals, or furosemide administration in 6-week-old C57BL/6JJcl mice showed a decrease in both tissue sodium concentrations in the medulla and sodium concentration gradients from the cortex to the medulla. Further, sodium magnetic resonance imaging revealed reductions in the sodium concentration of the medulla and in the gradient from the cortex to the medulla in BKS.Cg-Leprdb+/+ Leprdb/Jcl mice at very early type-2 diabetes mellitus stages compared to corresponding control BKS.Cg-m+/m+/Jcl mice. Conclusions: The kidneys of BKS.Cg-Leprdb+/+ Leprdb/Jcl mice aged 6 weeks showed impairments in the countercurrent multiplication system. We propose the utility of 23Na MRI for evaluating functional changes in diabetic kidney disease, not as markers that reflect structural damage. Thus, 23Na MRI may be a potential very early marker for structures beyond the glomerulus; this may prompt intervention with novel efficacious tubule-targeting therapies.

    In contrast to the “Pr-issue” that neither PrBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>7</sub> (Pr123) nor PrBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>4</sub>O<sub>8</sub> (Pr124) shows superconductivity (SC), we have observed 100%-fraction of SC in an oxygen-reduced Pr<sub>2</sub>Ba<sub>4</sub>Cu<sub>7</sub>O<sub>15−<italic>δ</italic>
    </sub> (Pr247) which has a hybrid structure that Pr247 = Pr123 + Pr124. It is found that Cu nuclear-spin signals from the CuO<sub>2</sub> planes observed at 300 K are completely wiped out at 2 K. Instead, the plane signals at 2 K are observed at higher frequencies. This indicates that, despite the bulk SC, the CuO<sub>2</sub> planes in Pr247 are found to be in an insulating and antiferromagnetically ordered state.

    23Na-MRI provides information on Na+ content, and its application in the medical field has been highly anticipated. However, for existing clinical 1H-MRI systems, its implementation requires an additional broadband RF transmitter, dedicated transceivers, and RF coils for Na+ imaging. However, a standard medical MRI system cannot often be modified to perform 23Na imaging. We have developed an add-on crossband RF repeater system that enables 23Na-MRI simply by inserting it into the magnet bore of an existing 1H MRI. The three axis gradient fields controlled by the 1H-MRI system were directly used for 23Na imaging without any deformation. A crossband repeater is a common technique used for amateur radio. This concept was proven by a saline solution phantom and in vivo mouse experiments. This add-on RF platform is applicable to medical 1H MRI systems and can enhance the application of 23Na-MRI in clinical usage.

    We propose a systematic method of obtaining the spectra of noises that cause the decoherence of spins in solids. Based on this method, we experimentally show that this method can be applied to nuclear spins in semiconductors. We clarify that the spectral intensity must be derived from the long-time tail of the multiple-echo decay. To obtain higher-frequency noise, the inversion-pulse interval must be as short as possible, which required us to employ the alternating-phase Carr-Purcell sequence instead of the widely used Carr-Purcell Meiboom-Gill. For As-75 nuclear spin in variously-doped GaAs, we observed a Lorentzian spectrum, instead of the commonly observed 1/f spectrum. This indicates that the nuclear spins are indeed in a coherently-controlled state.

    By developing the sensitivity of our custom-made spectrometer, we have succeeded for the first time in detecting the strains in an Al0.3Ga0.7As/GaAs heterostructrued sample through Al nuclear spins based on standard nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique. By analyzing the observed quadrupolar-split frequency value, it is concluded that the strain is dominantly caused by the lattice mismatch around the interface, rather than the contraction of epoxy resin that bundles the sample.     We present Cu nuclear-resonance results for superconducting Pr-based copper oxide Pr2Ba4Cu7O15-y (Pr-247). Above T-c, Cu spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T-1 in the zigzag chains does not follow the Korringa-like relation but is found to be proportional to T-0.5. Just below T-c, 1/T-1 does not exhibit the Hebel-Slichter coherence peak but starts to decrease rapidly with proportional to T-2. Along with the Cu zero-field NMR evidence of antiferromagnetic ordering in the CuO2 planes below T-N = 285 K [S. Watanabe, Y. Yamada, S. Sasaki, LT Proceedings, 2006, submitted for publication], the 1/T-1 data in the chain sites clearly indicate that the superconductivity of Pr-247 is driven by the zigzag chain, while the planes are in an antiferromagnetic insulating state.     We present NQR experiments for the planar Cu sites in superconducting Pr2Ba4Cu7O14.5 (T-c = 15 K). The planar signals observed around 30 MHz at 300K disappear below 285 K, which indicates that a large internal magnetic field is present at the planar sites due to antiferromagnetic ordering below T-N = 285 K. Indeed, we observe NQR signals at 50-130 MHz, well below TN. From the lineshape analysis, we found that there are two chemically inequivalent planar Cu sites with internal magnetic fields of 7.1 T and 9.6 T. This confirms that the planar Cu sites are insulating, while metallic conductivity is due to the CuO double chains. Thus, it is very likely to say that the superconductivity in Pr2Ba4Cu7O14.5 is driven by the CuO double chains, not by the CuO2 planes.

    This Letter reports on NMR studies of C-13 in K3 C60 above and below T(c) with an applied field of 2.93 T. It is found that non-single-exponential recovery data can be fitted by two components and normalized to an identical shape. With T1 defined in this way, Fermi-liquid behavior is identified above T(c), and a broadened Hebel-Slichter peak observed below T(c) is well explained by the Eliashberg theory with 2DELTA(0)/k(B)T(c)=4.31. The possibility of strong electron correlation and the origin of the multi-exponential recovery are discussed.

    By high oxygen pressure synthesis, La1.82Ca1.18Cu2O6 was found to be superconducting (T(C)(zero) = 49K). Using the conventional spin-echo method, a nuclear resonance experiment is conducted on a powder La1.82Ca1.18Cu2O6 sample. Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) spectrum of La-139 at 4.2K is obtained for the first time. The quadrupolar frequency (nu-Q) was estimated to be 5.9 +/- 0.1 MHz. The broad spectrum (the full width at half maximum intensity is about 2.5MHz) indicates that the electric field gradient (EFG) is distributed. Spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) is also discussed.

    The nuclear magnetic resonance and relaxation (NMR) were measured for 11B in Cr1−xTxB2 (T=Mo and V). The 11B NMR spectrum with a powder pattern characteristic of the SDW state was observed in the vicinity of the collapse of the antiferromagnetism. The SDW state in this system was found to be of intermediate regime of itinerant magnetism by analyses of the temperature dependence of the hyperfine field and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. © 1990, All rights reserved.

    Using a conductive and transparent tip, which can bear higher bias voltages than a conventional scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) metal tip, for injecting tunneling electrons, we successfully obtained the dependence of luminescence intensity on excitation energy up to 7 eV for p-type GaAs. We found a threshold energy at 4.9 eV above which the luminescence intensity substantially increases. The increase is attributable to cathodoluminescence due to the recombination of electrons and holes created by impact ionization (I.I.). The present result experimentally supports the simulation result predicting that there is no clear-cut transition, but a soft crossover, in the energy dependence of I.I. rate.

    K-39-NMR spectra of superconducting fulleride K3C60 are obtained in the normal state. The K-39-NMR shifts of two symmetrical lines observed with no quadrupolar-split satellites, that are assigned to the potassium tetrahedral- and octahedral-sites, are found to show the same temperature (T) dependence as the C-13-NMR shifts. From roughly estimated spin-lattice relaxation time, it is found that the conduction-electron density at the potassium site is nearly the same as that at the carbon site. These confirm that the uniform Pauli spin susceptibility, whose T dependence is considered to come from the predicted band effect, causes the reductions of both the C-13- and K-39-NMR shifts with decreasing T. Two experimental facts are pointed out for the T' site observed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

    Both C-13-NMR line shapes and relaxation processes, that are obtained for a well-characterized K3C60 sample, are analyzed consistently by taking into consideration the anisotropy at the carbon site as well as the molecular motion. The Knight shift and the spin-lattice relaxation time are experimentally obtained from this analysis. Above T-c, it is found, from the validity of the extended Korringa relation, that the electronic state is a Fermi liquid in which antiferromagnetic interaction can be treated within the random phase approximation, and that the substantial temperature dependence of the spin susceptibility comes from the band structure as well as the thermal contraction of the lattice distance. Below T-c, it is found from the presence of a broadened coherence peak that K3C60 is an s-wave superconductor in which the electron-phonon is weakly coupled in the presence of Coulomb electron interaction.

    C-13 nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) spectra are obtained to investigate the electronic properties of a superconducting fulleride K3C60. Asymmetric line shapes below 235 K are reproduced by the powder patterns of anisotropic NMR frequency shifts (K-i) of electronic single-site. The temperature (T) dependence of K-i indicates that the C-13 hyperfine coupling (A(spin)) has both an isotropic part (A(iso)(spin)) and an anisotropic part (A(ax)(spin)) with A(iso)(spin)/A(ax)(spin) = 0.78. Substantial decrease in the spin susceptibility (i.e. chi(spin)(T-c)/chi(spin)(300 K) = 0.55) is not explained by the lattice contraction alone. The Knight shift values can be deduced experimentally without assuming the chemical shift values, since our analysis shows that the line shapes below T-c are affected negligibly by the magnetic-field distribution, which is consistent with the large penetration depth.     C-13 spin-lattice relaxation was measured for a superconducting fulleride K3C60. It is found that non-single exponential relaxation (NSER) data at low temperatures (T &lt; 55 K), which have a T-independent shape above and below T-c, are well reproduced by only the anisotropy parameter (alpha(spin)) for the hyperfine coupling that was derived from a line-shape analysis. From the simulation for various values of alpha(spin), the shape of the NSER, as well as the asymmetric line shapes, is found to be caused by the anisotropy of an electronic single-site rather than electronic multi-sites. By extracting the isotropic part of relaxation time, (T-1)(iso), from the NSER, it is found that an extended Korringa relation holds up to 300 K with K(alpha) = 7.4, and that the T dependence of [(T-1)(iso)T](-1) results from a decrease in the density of states. Below T-c, a broadened Hebel-Slichter coherence peak is observed, which means s-wave Cooper pairing. The T dependence of [(T-1)(iso)T](-1) below T-c is well reproduced by a theoretical prediction with the superconducting gap 2 Delta(0)/k(B)T(c) = 4.3. The origin of the isotropic hyperfine coupling is also discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

    We report a study of C-13 NMR spin-lattice relaxation in the superconducting fulleride K3C60 at low temperatures (T). The experimentally obtained relaxation data, which are scaled to a T-independent relaxation shape, are found to be well reproduced by the anisotropy parameter alpha(spin) = A(iso)(spin)/A(ax)(spin), where A(iso)(spin) and A(ax)(spin) are the isotropic and anisotropic part of the C-13 hyperfine coupling of conduction electrons, respectively. Simulation for a powder sample with various alpha(spin) values indicates that the deviation from a single-exponential relaxation is largest when the hyperfine coupling is isotropic to some extent (i.e., alpha(spin) approximate to 0.5) instead of purely anisotropic (i.e., alpha(spin) = 0). These results justify a model based on the electronic single site. Moreover, from the validity of the extended Korringa relation with K(alpha) = 5.7, it is found that the electronic state is a Fermi liquid in which the relaxation rate is enhanced substantially by the antiferromagnetic electron interaction.

    We report on a study of carbon thirteen (C-13) NMR spectra in a superconducting fulleride K3C60. It is found that the spectra are reproduced as powder patterns of anisotropic NMR shifts. By analyzing the NMR shifts, the ratio of isotropic hyperfine coupling (A(iso)(spin)) of conduction spin electrons to anisotropic one (A(ax)(spin)) is obtained experimentally for the first time (A(iso)(spin)/A(ax)(spin) = 0.78). The substantial isotropy is consistent with the crystal structure of the C-60 molecule. The contribution of carbon p pi-orbitals to A(ax)(spin) found to be dominant.

    So far, it has been widely believed that the superconductivity in cuprates is driven by CuO2 planes. On the other hand, there were some repots that, for a Pr-based superconductor Pr247, the superconductivity is not driven by the planes but the double chains. In the first year of this research period, we clarified that, for Pr-based Pr247, the Cu nuclear spins in planes are in an insulating state, indicating clearly that the planes do not contribute to the superconductivity. In the 2nd and 3rd year, we found out that, from the temperature dependence of Cu-T1, the double chains drive the superconductivity whereas the planes do not show superconductivity.

    In this research project, we have performed research on the preparation of nuclear spin-lattice by fluorination of the diamond surface, on the development of a system for the control and readout of nuclear spin-electron states, on high sensitivity AC field detection using the Hadamard basis, and on control and readout of the nuclear spin states. We have successfully detected AC magnetic field by a spin-locking method at high sensitivity, and have successfully visualized the image of RF field distribution. Furthermore, we have successfully initialized the nuclear spin states by using nonselective microwave pulses and observed Rabi oscillations of the nuclear spin state.
