This paper describes how TSUBAMATE, which is founded on community-based, functions as an intermediary organization for internships between higher education institutes (HEIs) and companies, and what kind of effects their activities present. TSUBAMATE executes coordination for the problem-based learning (PBL) in internships that are carried out by collaborating HEIs and companies. An important factor for successful PBLs is connecting learning goals established by HEIs with real industrial problems; therefore, close communication with both HEIs and companies to deepen mutual understanding is essential. TSUBAMATE not only gives HEIs the appropriate training contents but also conveys the insights induced by participating students to the companies at the same time. This win-win process can be said “program development” rather than coordination that TSUBAMATE accomplishes with the rich and strong relationships with both sides of the collaboration in nature. We observe the excellent contribution to the regional development by an academia-industry collaborating PBL program developed by TSUBAMATE via an international internship project as a good practice case.

Multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary project-based, internship-based learning with real industrial problem-solving has been predicted to enhance global engineers' competencies; however, less discussion has been devoted to learning practical effectiveness. The Global Dormitory (G-DORM) project, a bilateral student exchange project organized by Japan's Niigata University in collaboration with four universities from the lower Mekong countries of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, developed a pedagogical approach that included such an internship for fostering the growth of global Scitech leaders. This paper discusses the effectiveness of - and challenges in - using the G-DORM approach to enable students to enhance the following competencies: (1) generic skills for working in industry; (2) global competencies for engineers; (3) capacity for solving regional revitalization issues using an integrated standpoint; and (4) interests in the industry. This study's analyzed data were extracted from the questionnaire responses of 82 students who participated in this internship in the Japanese academic year 2018-2019 and from the questionnaire responses of selected hosting companies. The study results emphasized that G-DORM approach-based internships could positively affect students' competence with regard to global engineering, especially through the designing of stepping-up programs aimed at developing competence. Furthermore, the study results suggested the optimization of internship periods, pre-studies, intervention by moderators during internships, and improvements in post-studies as challenges for future works. We believe that the G-DORM approach has the potential to contribute toward improving industries in lower Mekong countries by aiding in solving their industrial issues through education and fostering globally competent engineers in these countries.

Global project-based learning (PBL) with university-industry collaboration is one of the good ways to enhance global engineering competency. Also, an internship is useful to fill out a gap in the transition from university to industry. Niigata University has implemented global group work (GW) internships in the G-DORM project, which is an interactive student exchange program with four universities in the Mekong region. In the GW internship, students form a multi-academic year, multi-cultural, and multi-disciplinary group as if the students were international boarding students at a dormitory. And the formed groups tackle a global PBL in an internship that is carried out in cooperation with Niigata regional companies whose business extends globally. This paper presents the contents and the achievements of the GW internship carried out in Tsubame city in 2019 in terms of students' satisfaction and interests in the regional industry. The practice in 2019 developed the motivation and the actual action of students in a step-up tendency.

G-DORM is a student exchange project that has global project-based learning (PBL) in an internship by Niigata University with four universities in Mekong countries. In 2017, actual implementation of G-DORM was launched. One of the uniqueness of G-DORM is that students form cross-academic year, cross-disciplinary, multinational groups to have the internship. This paper aims to grasp achievements of G-DOMR carried out in 2017, in terms of coordination with companies for program designing, recruiting and selection of students, implementation of internship in the student exchange program and evaluation. In addition, this paper argues values of this international cooperation for global PBL in an internship based on findings of the achievement of G-DORM in 2017. As a result, global PBL in an internship of G-DORM is implied as a model of international engineering education that can create impacts to students as well as industry.

This paper describes the thermal collector type loop thermosiphon for low-temperature waste heat recovery. Water is used as the working fluid for heat transport at temperatures 100 degrees C and higher. The loop thermosiphon comprises of a thermal receiver, a condenser, and riser and downcomer tubes. The thermal receiver is made of a cupper plate brazed by meandering heat transfer tube. This receiver collects the thermal radiation from the electric heater at the heat transfer area of 1000 cm(2) (40 cm x 25 cm), and transports the heat by vaporization of water to the condenser having heat transfer area of 62 cm(2). In the no inclination mode, the thermosiphon is upright so that the thermal receiver and the condenser are placed vertically. In this mode, the effective thermal conductivity exceeds 60 kW/(m K) when the thermal receiver temperature was higher than 125 degrees C for the water filling ratio alpha = 30-70%. Although the effective thermal conductivity is deteriorated for the higher filling ratio alpha = 80% and 90%, the effects from the filling ratio are tiny for alpha = 30-70%. The experimental tests were also made for the negatively inclined mode where the inlet and exit ports of the receiver were directed downward and for the positively inclined modes where they were directed upward. The tests revealed that the negative inclination almost halted the heat transport. However, the tests also indicated that the positive inclination showed the performance comparable to the no inclination mode for the cases up to the inclination angle 90 degrees. We tested a thermosyphon loop with water as the working fluid using heating rates between 100W and 400W. Four kinds of core blocks were installed in the evaporator and tested: a hollow block, and blocks with narrow holes: Phi 2.2 mm x 90; Phi 2.5mm x 55; and Phi 4.0 mm x 30. The temperature distribution indicated stable flow circulation inside the thermosyphon at low volume ratios but was unstable when the volume ratio was increased higher than 30%. The characteristics of the flow pattern are summarized as a flow map showing the heating rate versus the volume ratio. The recovered heat and the thermal resistance of the thermosyphon loop were clearly improved by using the core blocks with narrow holes instead of hollow blocks for the treated volume ratios from 20% to 80%. The thermal resistance increased when the volume ratio reached high values, suggesting that the effects from the abnormality of the flow circulation affected thermal resistance. The velocity of the gas stream in the thermosyphon was estimated by assuming an isothermal state, and it is diagrammed showing the heating rate at different temperatures. The current experiment of the thermosyphon loop is plotted in this diagram, which indicates the need for a wide margin due to the limitations of the sonic velocity and the pressure head at the full height of the heat pipe.

This study deals with the attenuation characteristics of a double orifice silencer on ventilation holes. In this study, we inserted a tubular sheet of nonwoven fabric between the two orifices to improve the dip characteristics of the silencer. Then, we measured the sound transmission loss of the silencer with a four-microphone impedance tube. Simple double orifice silencers can be analyzed in one-dimension, but the acoustical analysis of the nonwoven fabric sheet is much difficult. In addition, in one-dimensional analysis, we must deal with the acoustical model with regard to the radial direction transparency of sound through the nonwoven fabric sheet. The sound transmission loss of the double orifice silencer, which bridged the nonwoven fabric sheet, was calculated via one-dimensional analysis. In addition, in this analysis, the acoustical constants of the nonwoven fabric sheets measured by the "two-cavity method" were installed in an equivalent circuit. It was observed that the analysis and the experimental results were in similar trend.

In this paper fundamental sound absorption characteristics of expanded polystyrene beads with several geometries are reported when they are packed in some thick layers with and without back air space. The normal incidence sound absorption coefficients, which were obtained by the experiments using two-microphone impedance tube, were evaluated comparing to theoretical estimations. Experimental data were also compared to the similar conditions but hard material particles like glass beads whose acoustic property was investigated by Sakamoto et. al. in a preceding study. Then following results were obtained; packed layer with expanded polystyrene beads has almost equal sound absorption coefficient to the similar layer with hard and solid material: numerical estimation of sound absorption coefficient is valid enough except for the case having large back air space: lowering peak frequency of sound absorption coefficient is available by overfilling and compressing particles. The authors also consider that applying soft, light, and low cost material to the sound absorbing structures is very meaningful. Because human damage caused by falling of wall and ceiling panel of buildings is avoidable particularly under an earthquake attack.

This paper presents a statistical method to identify regions where similar manufacturing enterprises exist toward developing partner regions as a countermeasure against possible disasters. Following a major disruptive event ‘e.g., earthquake, hurricane, or influenza pandemic’, a manufacturing enterprise may be heavily damaged forcing a temporary cessation of production. An effective counter action available to maintain business involves relocating production and shipment procedures to alternative sites or consigning some portion of the business activities to other companies with similar or almost identical industrial techniques and production assets. This typical approach is generally referred to as a business continuity plan or business continuity management ‘BCP/BCM’. However, adopting such a strategy is difficult for many small- and medium-sized enterprises
hence, the author has recommended some public organizations or establishments to plan “regional BCP” in preparation for a potential disastrous event. An important concept of the regional BCP is the development of an interregional mutual assistance partnership for quick recovery of a damaged industry in the affected region following a disaster. Therefore, local governments may be appropriate as the primary agency for such activities. Because proper and sufficient resources should be sent to the affected area for recovery, its partner region should have a similar industrial structure and scale. Further, cooperating regions should be geographically separated, but within an appropriate distance between each other, to avoid being struck simultaneously while maintaining a partnership that allows low-cost and rapid access after an event. In an attempt to establish an adequate relationship between two regions, 71 variables from the establishment and enterprise census, population census, and industrial statistics were chosen as indices for identifying industrial structures of regions in a wider area. Principal component analysis was applied to these variables, and correlation coefficients were calculated from the principal component scores with eigenvalues greater than one. As a case study, we focused on Ojiya City, Niigata, which was affected by a massive earthquake in 2004, resulting in heavy damages to many manufacturing facilities in the region, and attempted to find its partner regions using the aforementioned method. As a result, higher correlation coefficients indicated greater similarity of industrial structures and commonality among customers between companies in different regions. Finally, regions having relatively high correlation coefficients to each other have a strong incentive to form mutually cooperative and reciprocally beneficial partnerships for disaster reduction. © 2013, JAPAN SECTION OF THE REGIONAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL. A large portion of patients of larynx cancer tekes total laryngectomy and loses their original voice consequently. Some ways to obtain substitute voice for total laryngectomees have been presented, however, each of them cannot conquer inconveniences, tone quality, extremely low tone, monotonousness etc. We invented very simple, small enough to be built in TE (tracheaesophageal) shunt valve but functional substitute voice that is driven by patient's own expiration and its tone pitch can be controlled by expiratory pressure simultaneously. The new device has an outward-striking membrane as an oscillating valve and a set of piston-cylinder mechanism, which controls oscillator's tension and alters pitch of sound. As results of performance experiments applied to the prototype model made as twice scale as an actual dimension, the device produces the lowest sound frequency of 205 Hz and pitch range of 374 cent being approximately proportional to driving air pressure between 0.8 and 2.2 kPa. It is said that normal pitch of female voice is around 210 Hz, thus we consider the possibility of the device as a new substitute voice was shown that contributes to improvement of total laryngectomees' QOL particularly to female patients.

And there is a current situation that low-temperature exhaust heat has been discarded from a factory. So we have started a study of the heat pipe for utilizing this exhaust heat. It's necessary to carry out heat transportation of long distance and high density for utilizing the exhaust heat. Therefore the present study had been used the loop thermosyphon. But quantities of the water which are enclosed in loop thermosyphon will affect heat transportation. So the present study has been practiced the experiment which had been changed quantities of the water and thermal dose. And we have researched the effect of heat transportation. As the result, heat transportation is improved with increasing thermal dose.

In Japan, business continuity plan/management (BCP/BCM) is recognized as a very significant issue as in other advanced countries, because of the great earthquake disasters in 2004 and 2007 in Niigata Prefecture that caused disruptions of many small and medium sized production companies as well as forcing all Japanese automobile manufacturers to cease production for several days. However, according to some reports the BCP establishment rate in Japan is still low. This study focuses on Ojiya City, which was seriously affected by the Niigataken Chuetsu Earthquake in 2004. The production industries have a concentrated presence in Ojiya City, making it an excellent case study for clarifying the disincentives to BC planning at small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as demonstrating a new concept for increasing regional resilience, because it represents areas of potential resource consolidation for cooperation within the industrial community, the regional civic community and other remote regions. As a result, several key elements are proposed that may support “ regional BCP” that may consequently lead to true “ regional resiliency.”

JEL Classification: L29, R00, Z00

In this paper fundamental sound absorption characteristics of expanded polystyrene beads with several geometries are reported when they are packed in some thick layers with and without back air space. The normal incidence sound absorption coefficients, which were obtained by the experiments using two-microphone impedance tube, were evaluated comparing to theoretical estimations. Experimental data were also compared to the similar conditions but hard material particles like glass beads whose acoustic property was investigated by Sakamoto et. al. in a preceding study. Then following results were obtained
packed layer with expanded polystyrene beads has almost equal sound absorption coefficient to the similar layer with hard and solid material : numerical estimation of sound absorption coefficient is valid enough except for the case having large back air space : lowering peak frequency of sound absorption coefficient is available by overfilling and compressing particles. The authors also consider that applying soft, light, and low cost material to the sound absorbing structures is very meaningful. Because human damage caused by falling of wall and ceiling panel of buildings is avoidable particularly under an earthquake attack.

Orbicularis oris superior (OOS), orbicularis oris inferior (OOI), levator anguli oris (LAO), depressor anguli oris (DAO),and mentalis (Ment) are considered as typical perioral muscles that contribute to the force and pressure occurence in and around lip aperture. This study presents the experimental and analytical results that show correlationships between eledrical muscle activities and mechanical parameters on bilabial closing force, puckering force, POM (perioral muscle) value and so forth. Besides, zero-lag correlation coefficients between rectified and smoothed SEMG signals of LAO and DAO was constantly higher than other muscle combinations including OOS-OOI combination considered to be most closely related with lip movement. Among lip tasks, prominently high correlation between LAO and DAO was shown when subjects tried to close their lip bilabially at principally distal part. Consequently authors succeeded to prove the great importance of the coordination between LAO and DAO for producing bilabial consonants, drinking and eating, pooling saliva in oral cavity, and others, while the applicability of POM meter to myofunctional therapy is obscured.

It is important for senior brass instrument players to study the detailed control parameters for embouchure building. While many investigators have reported the preliminary data on the muscle behavior, the precise aspects are unrevealed so far. The purpose of the present paper is to study dynamic perioral muscle behavior of French horn players and to investigate their lip valve function by measuring the contact pressure on teeth buccal surface during playing. It was shown from the experimental results that the advanced players contracted depressor and levator angulioris especially for high tone playing. The combined contraction by these muscles may contribute to smaller lip aperture formation appropriate for higher tones. Inversely a strong contraction of m. buccinator was found insignificantly from the results for the advanced players while it is well known that m. buccinator contracts hard during playing.

Although the embouchure, which means "lip set" for playing wind instruments, is recognized as the most important element for good performance, very little about parameters of it controlled by the player have been cleared and, especially at the field of pedagogy for brass instrument performance, this theme still is in chaos consequently. Considering the essentiality to know the face what occurs in the perioral area of the player during performance, mouthpiece forces and the pressures the teeth receive on its buccal surface from facial muscles were measured. Results of some experiments revealed these evident differences between very advanced and just beginning French horn players; 1) at almost all registers beginners' mouthpiece forces were greater than the advanced. 2) at extreme low register beginner's buccinator and the part of modiolus loosen while the advanced kept its tension.
