Three studies examined the hypothesis that people have subsets of self-knowledge corresponding to their close relationships. Study 1 showed that the degree of positive judgment about one's "self-with-othcr" traits varied depending on who the other was, suggesting that participants referred to various subsets of self-knowledge for making judgments about themselves with different others. Study 1 also suggested that one's knowledge of "self-with-other" has positive values. Therefore it was supposed in Study 2 that visualizing one's father and thereby spreading activation, increased the positive rating of trait judgments about one's own self-with-fathcr. The results showed the predicted pattern, but did not indicate clear evidence for knowledge activation. Study 3 examined whether the visualizing effect would be observable on processing for only that subset information which corresponded to the visualized person. Those who visualized their fathers did not increase their level of positive judgments of their "self-with-other" traits for themselves with a close friend. However, contrary to expectations, those who visualized a close friend had significantly increased positive ratings of trait judgments for themselves with their fathers. The implications of activating the evaluative self-knowledge that corresponds to interpersonal relationships are discussed.

Sixty-sir male Japanese students verbally interacted with a confederate opponent, who expressed unreasonable requests politely or impolitely. Half of the participants was pressed to respond immediately, while the other half was not. Personality variables were found to determine the participants' responses to the conflict in interactions with the situational variables; that is, verbal aggressiveness increased hostile responses only when the confederate behaved in an impolite manner, and self-monitoring increased integrative responses only when the participants were not pressed to respond quickly.

The multiple goals theory of conflict management (Ohbuchi &amp
Tedeschi. in press) postulated that participants in a conflict pursue to achieve resource goals (economic and personal resources) and social goals (relationship, identity, justice, and power-hostility). The hypotheses based on this theory were examined by the episode method, in which 207 university students were asked to rate their recent experiences of interpersonal conflicts in terms of participants' attributes, goals, and tactics. More than 80% of the subjects answered that they were motivated to achieve multiple goals in their attempts to resolve the conflicts. Social goals were found to be more strongly activated, and economic resource goals were least strongly activated. Regression analyses revealed that the effects of participants' attributes on tactical preference were mediated by goals.

The prediction that behavioral politeness would evoke mitigating responses and compliance by the other participants was examined in a role-playing experiment. Seventy-three mala Japanese students verbally interacted with a confederate opponent, who expressed her unreasonable requests politely or impolitely. Participants were pressed to respond to the request either impolitely or after a 30-s delay. The effects of politeness were observed on compliance and on tactical dimensions; that is, participants more frequently complied with and gave more integrative and appeasing responses to the polite confederate than the impolite one. Time pressure was found to limit the effects of politeness only regarding the hostile-appeasing dimension of response.

This study employed a scenario method to test she hypotheses of the multiple goals theory. One hundred and seven Japanese students were asked to read the scenarios that described a conflict between two people and to consider themselves as the one of whom an economic cost was unreasonably requested by the other. Four situational variables (resource cost familiality between the two persons, the other person's manner, and the other person's tactic) were presented in the scenarios. In addition, a set of scales to measure four different goals (relationship, identity, justice, and resource) were included as well as two types of mitigative tactics (integrative and appeasing), and two types of confrontational tactics (assertive and aggressive). A basic hypothesis of the theory--that social goals would be activated even in resource conflicts--was supported It was also found that familiarity activated relationship goals, which increased mitigative tactics and compliance, but decreased confrontational tactics, and that a resource cost activated resource goals, which increased both mitigative and confrontational tactics, but decreased compliance.

The purpose of this study was to find out image types of self which university students wished to present to familiar others and to examine relationships between their self-presentation to these targets and mental health. In the study 1, ninety male students were asked to describe their self-images that they wished to present to familiar others (father, mother, same-sex friend, opposite-sex friend, and teacher). Fifteen different types were detected among the reported self-images. Frequencies of each image type were found to strongly depend on the type of target person. In the study 2, seventy-nine male students were asked to select five types from the 15 images, which they wished best to present to the targets, and to rate the degree of their being successfully presented each image. It was also found that the selection was strongly affected by the type of target person. These findings were explained in terms of Schlenker & Weigold's (1989) self-identification theory. Though most subjects assertively presented themselves in familiar relations, these tendencies correlated with neither the level of self-esteem nor of social anxiety.

We examined the effects of multiple goals on verbal responses in an interpersonal conflict situation. Participants who had high or low levels of concern for the personal resource talked with an experimental actor and were made to believe that trained observers would evaluate his or her ability to cooperate or to be assertive based on their conversation. Then, they experienced a conflict resulting from an irrational demand that the actor expressed either politely or impolitely. Participants chose an integrative strategy in the presence of any two of the following conditions: low levels of participants' own concern for the personal resource, observers who would evaluate participants' ability to cooperate, and the actor's use of polite expression. When the opposite conditions applied the participants chose a distributive strategy. In addition, it was found that when a participant's level of concern for the personal resource was high, the use of a polite expression increased the likelihood of a mitigating strategy being adopted whereas the use of an impolite expression increased the likelihood of a hostile strategy being adopted. The results are discussed in light of tactical decision-making processes proposed by the multiple goals theory.

Americans (individualists) and Japanese (collectivists) were asked to rate their conflict experiences in terms of goal orientation, goal attainment, tactics, and outcome satisfaction. Individualists preferred assertive tactics, whereas collectivists preferred avoidance tactics. The results regarding goal orientation showed that individualists were strongly oriented toward achieving justice, but collectivists were more motivated by a concern for relationships with others. The finding that attainment of a justice goal did not strongly satisfy the Americans suggests that justice is an instrumental value and not a terminal value in conflict situations.
