地中探査レーダは地中の埋設物の探査を目的としているため，レーダ画像が土壌より受ける影響は極めて著しい．従って，その影響を取り除くためには，まず土壌の媒質定数を測定する必要がある．しかし，従来のほとんどの測定法では，サンプルを採取した領域の局所的な誘電率を測っており，望ましい結果が得られない．そこで本論文では，地表面に接触させたアンテナの共振周波数と共振抵抗の測定値から，土壌の媒質定数（比誘電率，導電率）を推定する測定方法を提案する．本手法では，数値解析の結果をもとに土壌の媒質定数とアンテナの特性の関係を表すモノグラフを作成し，測定によって得られたアンテナの特性をモノグラフ上にプロットすることにより，土壌の媒質定数を推定している．実験結果より，本手法の測定値は，土壌の電気定数の空間的平均値を示していると考えられる．

送信アンテナと受信アンテナの最適な偏波状態を得るため, 本論文はmatched-pol channelの場合の最適な偏波状態の公式を用いた反復数計算法を提案する.この方法は少ない反復で収束し, プログラムの作製も容易である.ここでは, 提案方法を用いた二つの数値例を示した.一つの例ではIoannidisの結果と一致し, 提案方法の有効性が示された.他の例の結果によると, 送信アンテナと受信アンテナの偏波状態か独立な場合, 対応する電力比率(ターケットとクタっター)はco-pol channel, cross-pol channel, matched channelの場合より非常に大きくなる.このことから, 考慮するモデルの重要性が明らかとなった.

For a completely polarised wave, a simple method is proposed for obtaining the characteristic polarisation states, in the form of the Stokes vector, showing that the CO-POL nulls are the most fundamental characteristic polarisation states, and that the other states can easily be obtained from the expressions of the CO-POL nulls.

The subsurface radar suffers from two typical problems, i.e., strong clutter from surface and severe wave attenuation in the underground. This paper presents a unique countermeasure to these problems using a polarimetric FM-CW radar and an equivalent sensitivity time control (STC) technique. We apply the polarimetric filtering principle to suppress surface clutter either in the Co-pol channel or in the X-pol channel of synthetic aperture radar, yielding to polarimetric enhanced target image. This technique works when the surface clutter and target have different polarization properties. Moreover, we use an equivalent STC technique specially suited for FM-CW radar for a deep object sounding to compensate wave attenuation within the ground. These techniques contribute to a significant improvement of the radar performance and the detection image contrast, although the detection of the target is in general a much more complicated topic. The field experiments were carried out to show the usefulness of the method. Some detection results are presented. © 1998 IEEE.

The Sinclair scattering matrix plays a decisive role in radar polarimetry. For realization of a real-time and full polarimetric radar, there are some technical problems associated with hardware implementations. Since the FM-CW radar system is suitable for short-range sensing applications, we modified an FM-CW radar to a real-time and polarimetric system by adding a PIN diode-switching circuitry for antenna polarization changes. A parallel operation scheme in the signal processing and the radar control is employed in a personal computer, which enables 44 snapshots for acquiring scattering matrices and displays the polarimetric target classification results along 44 radar ranges per second. In this paper, we present the hardware design of the system and its fundamental application to the classification of targets using the three-component decomposition theorem. © 1998 IEEE.

Huynen has already provided a method to Decompose a Mueller matrix in order to retrieve detailed target information in a polarimetric radar system. However, this Decomposition sometimes fails in the presence of small error or noise in the elements of a Mueller matrix. This paper attempts to improve Huynen's Decomposition method. First, we give the definition of stable Decomposition and present an example, showing a problem of Huynen's approach. Then two methods are proposed to carry out stable Decompositions, based on the nonlinear least square method and the Newton's method. Stability means the Decomposition is not sensitive to noise. The proposed methods overcomes the problems on the unstable Decomposition of Mueller matrix, and provides correct information of a target.

This paper presents a method for land cover classification using the SIR-C/X-SAR imagery based on the maximum likelihood method and the polarimetric filtering. The main feature is to use polarimetric enhanced image information in the pre-processing stage for the classification of SAR imagery. First, polarimetric filtered images are created where a specific target is enhanced versus another, then the image data are incorporated into the feature vector which is essential for the maximum likelihood classification. Specific target classes within the SAR image are categorized according to the maximum likelihood method using the wavelet transform. Addition of polarimetric enhanced image in thee preprocessing stage contributes to the increase of classification accuracy. It is shown that the use of polarimetric enhanced images serves efficient classifications of land cover.

レーダポーラリメトリで基本となるデータは散乱行列である. 我々はFM-CWレーダを用いて散乱行列の測定を行ってきた. しかし, 実用的な速さで測定するには様々な問題点があった. そこでピンダイオードスイッチを用いて送信波を順次切り替えることにより, Real-Time で Full Polarimetricデータ (散乱行列) を取得する, FM-CWレーダシステムを作製した. 更に, レーダポーラリメトリ理論を利用した解析法の一つである3成分分解法を用いて, Real-Timeでターゲット認識を行うためのシステムを作成し, 実際に測定を行い, ターゲットの認識を試みた.
